For more than a century, cameras have been relatively easy to recognise.
A CCTV camera hangs from a ceiling. A photographer raises a camera to their eye. A smartphone is held in front of someone's face.
Artificial intelligence is beginning to change that.
A new generation of AI-powered glasses can contain miniature cameras, microphones, speakers and increasingly sophisticated software while looking remarkably similar to ordinary spectacles. The wearer can photograph or record what is happening around them without necessarily reaching for a phone.
That creates a new and uncomfortable question:
What happens to public privacy when the camera becomes almost invisible?
A camera disguised as ordinary eyewear
AI glasses are not simply cameras mounted onto spectacles.
Modern devices can combine cameras and microphones with an AI assistant capable of interpreting what the wearer sees and hears. Depending on the device and software, this can include answering questions about objects, translating text, describing surroundings, taking photographs, recording video and interacting with digital services.
The important distinction is that the technology is no longer necessarily obvious to everyone nearby.
A smartphone being pointed at someone is conspicuous. A person wearing ordinary-looking glasses is not.
That difference could fundamentally alter how people behave around recording technology.
The privacy problem isn't necessarily the technology itself
Photography in public places is hardly new.
People have been carrying cameras for decades, and smartphones have made photography almost universal. In many countries, there is generally no expectation that everything happening in a public place is automatically private.
The problem with AI glasses is different. The person being recorded may not know that recording is taking place.
A small indicator light may exist on a particular device, but it can be difficult to notice from several metres away, in a crowded street, a busy pub or a noisy workplace.
This creates an information imbalance.
The wearer knows what the glasses are capable of. Everyone around them may not.
From recording to understanding
There is another major difference.
A conventional camera records an image. AI can potentially interpret that image. That distinction could become enormously important.
Imagine walking through a shopping centre while somebody wearing AI glasses looks in your direction.
A conventional camera might capture your face. An AI system could potentially analyse the image, recognise objects, read signs, interpret text or connect visual information with other data — depending on what software and databases the system has access to.
The camera is therefore only the first stage. The potentially more powerful technology is the intelligence sitting behind it.
What happens when facial recognition enters the picture?
Facial recognition could take the privacy implications considerably further.
A photograph of an unidentified person is one thing. A system capable of identifying that person is something else entirely.
If AI glasses eventually combine real-time visual analysis with facial-recognition databases, a wearer could theoretically obtain information about people around them simply by looking at them.
That does not mean today's consumer AI glasses automatically provide unrestricted facial recognition. There are technical, legal and policy restrictions, and manufacturers can deliberately prevent certain capabilities.
But the underlying hardware demonstrates how quickly the distinction between a pair of glasses and a sophisticated surveillance device could disappear.
The rise of “ambient surveillance”
Perhaps the most significant development is what could be called ambient surveillance.
Instead of deliberately deciding: “I'm going to record this person", recording becomes an incidental part of everyday life.
A wearer could leave their AI glasses switched on while walking through a city, attending a concert, visiting a restaurant or meeting friends. Hundreds of people might enter the camera's field of view without ever realising it.
The individual recordings may seem insignificant. But millions of such interactions could create something very different: an enormous amount of visual information generated continuously by ordinary people.
Privacy becomes harder to exercise
There is an uncomfortable paradox here.
The person wearing the glasses may have enormous control over what they record. The people being recorded have very little.
You cannot easily ask every stranger in a crowded railway station:
“Are your glasses recording me?”
Nor can you realistically determine what happens to the footage afterwards. Was it stored? Was it uploaded? Was it analysed by AI? Was it shared? Was it deleted?
Those questions become increasingly difficult when recording devices are small, wearable and connected to cloud services.
The workplace could be particularly complicated
AI glasses could also create difficult situations at work.
Imagine an employee wearing AI glasses during a meeting. They could potentially capture audio, video, documents and whiteboards without everyone else necessarily knowing.
That raises obvious concerns around:
- confidential business information
- customer data
- private conversations
- intellectual property
- employee monitoring
- legally privileged discussions
A company could prohibit the use of camera-equipped glasses in sensitive areas, but enforcing such rules may become increasingly difficult as devices become smaller and more conventional-looking.
What about schools, hospitals and private businesses?
The same problem extends into environments where privacy expectations are much stronger.
Hospitals could be particularly sensitive.
Patients may reasonably expect medical consultations, examinations and conversations to remain confidential. Yet wearable cameras introduce another potential recording device into the environment.
Schools face similar concerns involving children.
Restaurants, gyms, changing facilities, clubs and other private venues could also decide that AI glasses represent an unacceptable privacy risk.
Some businesses may eventually introduce explicit no-camera-glasses policies, just as many already restrict conventional photography.
The law may struggle to keep pace
Technology often advances faster than legislation.
Privacy laws generally focus on concepts such as personal data, consent, recording, processing and reasonable expectations of privacy.
AI glasses blur the boundaries between them.
Is the problem the photograph? The video? The audio? The biometric information? The AI analysis? The cloud storage? Or the eventual use of the information? A single pair of glasses could potentially involve all of them.
And the legal position differs significantly between countries.
In Britain, for example, data-protection law places important obligations on organisations processing personal data. But ordinary individuals using cameras in public can occupy a very different legal position from companies operating systematic surveillance.
That distinction becomes increasingly complicated when consumer devices acquire capabilities previously associated with professional surveillance systems.
The social consequences could be even greater
There is another issue that is harder to regulate.
Trust.
Imagine a future in which people routinely wonder whether the person standing beside them is recording.
Even if most people are not, the possibility alone could change behaviour.
People may become reluctant to have private conversations in public. They might avoid discussing sensitive subjects. They could become uncomfortable around strangers wearing smart glasses.
Eventually, the technology could create a form of psychological surveillance even when nobody is actually watching.
The knowledge that recording is possible can be enough to alter behaviour.
But AI glasses aren't necessarily the villain
It would be unfair to portray the technology entirely negatively.
AI glasses could have substantial benefits.
They can provide hands-free assistance, help people navigate environments, translate languages, provide information and potentially offer useful accessibility functions.
For some people with visual or other disabilities, wearable AI could become genuinely transformative.
There are also legitimate uses for recording public events, documenting incidents and preserving memories.
The question therefore isn't whether AI glasses should exist. It is where the boundaries should be drawn.
A new social rule may be emerging
The smartphone created a social convention around photography.
People learned that pointing a phone directly at somebody could be intrusive.
AI glasses challenge that convention because the camera doesn't necessarily need to be pointed anywhere.
The wearer simply looks.
That may require an entirely new etiquette.
Perhaps certain places will become explicitly “AI-glasses-free”. Perhaps visible recording indicators will become mandatory. Perhaps devices will eventually have stronger privacy controls that automatically disable recording in restricted locations.
Or perhaps society will simply become accustomed to it.
The camera you can't see
For decades, surveillance was associated with something obvious: a camera mounted high above the street.
Then cameras moved into our phones.
Now they are moving onto our faces. That transition matters because it changes the relationship between seeing and recording.
With conventional cameras, somebody usually makes a conscious decision to operate the device. With AI glasses, recording can become part of simply looking at the world.
And once artificial intelligence can analyse what the camera sees, the issue is no longer merely:
“Who's recording me?”
It becomes:
“What does the machine know about me?”
That may ultimately be the more important privacy question of the AI age. The camera may be tiny. It may be hidden in plain sight.
But its ability to observe, interpret and potentially remember the world around us could be enormous.
And unlike a CCTV camera on a wall, you might not even know where to look for it.
