Deer Stones of Mongolia: Who Created Them, and What Did Their Elaborate Carvings Represent?

Scattered across the windswept steppes of Mongolia stand some of the world's most intriguing prehistoric monuments. 

Known as Deer Stones, these towering carved monoliths have puzzled archaeologists for more than a century. 

Decorated with elegant images of flying deer, weapons, belts, and mysterious symbols, they offer a rare glimpse into the beliefs of Bronze Age nomadic peoples who left no written records behind.


More than 1,500 Deer Stones have been identified across the Eurasian steppe, with over 80 percent found in Mongolia. Most date to between approximately 1200 and 600 BC, making them around 3,000 years old. 

They are among the most distinctive surviving monuments of the Late Bronze Age and were recognised as part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2023.



Who Created the Deer Stones?

The exact identity of the people who erected the Deer Stones remains uncertain. 

Archaeologists generally associate them with the Deer Stone–Khirigsuur Culture, a network of pastoral nomadic communities that occupied Mongolia and neighbouring regions during the Late Bronze Age. These societies were among the earliest horse-riding cultures of Inner Asia and played a significant role in the development of steppe civilisation.


The stones are frequently found near large burial mounds known as khirgisuurs, along with sacrificial features containing horse remains. This close association suggests that Deer Stones formed part of a wider ceremonial landscape connected to elite individuals, ancestor worship, and ritual practices.


Although the names of these ancient peoples have been lost to history, their artistic achievements remain remarkably visible.



What Do the Stones Look Like?

Most Deer Stones are carved from granite and stand between one and four metres tall. They were carefully shaped and decorated before being erected upright on the open steppe.

Many are divided into symbolic sections. The upper portion often contains a stylised human face or circular motifs interpreted as the sun, moon, or earrings. The middle section typically features belts and weapons, while the lower portion may display animals or geometric designs.


The most striking feature, however, is the depiction of deer.

These are not ordinary deer. Their bodies appear elongated and graceful, with antlers sweeping dramatically backwards in almost impossible curves. Many seem to be flying rather than standing on the ground, giving them a dreamlike quality unlike any other Bronze Age art in Eurasia.



The Mystery of the Flying Deer

Why did the creators devote so much attention to these animals?

No one knows for certain, but several theories have emerged.


One interpretation is that the deer represented spiritual guides. The recurring image of a flying stag may symbolise the journey of the soul from the earthly world to the realm of ancestors. This would fit with the stones' close connection to burial and ceremonial sites.


Another possibility is that the deer embodied power, status, and protection. Deer were important animals throughout the Eurasian steppe and may have served as clan symbols or totems associated with elite lineages.


Some researchers suggest the animals represent transformation itself. Their exaggerated antlers and airborne appearance may reflect shamanic beliefs in which humans, animals, and spirits could move between different worlds.


Without written records, these interpretations remain speculative, but most archaeologists agree that the deer held profound symbolic significance.



More Than Just Deer

The monuments also feature a surprising range of other carvings.

Archaeologists have documented depictions of horses, elk, birds, tigers, pigs, weapons, axes, daggers, and bows. Some stones show detailed belts from which tools and weapons appear to hang. A small number even display human faces carved near the top.


These details provide valuable clues about Bronze Age life on the steppe. The weapons suggest a warrior culture, while the belts and personal equipment may have represented specific individuals. Some researchers believe certain Deer Stones were memorials to important chiefs or clan leaders whose identities were immortalised in stone.



Ancient Monuments of a Horse Culture

One of the strongest clues to the meaning of the Deer Stones comes from their relationship with horses.

Many nearby ritual structures contain horse burials and sacrificial deposits. Some sites contain dozens or even hundreds of horse remains, demonstrating the animal's importance in Bronze Age Mongolian society. Horses provided transport, status, military advantage, and possibly spiritual significance.

The Deer Stones therefore appear to have been part of a ceremonial tradition that linked powerful individuals, sacred animals, and the landscape itself.



Unanswered Questions

Despite decades of research, many mysteries remain.

Why were some stones lavishly decorated while others were relatively simple? Why do certain regions feature classic flying deer motifs while others contain different symbols? Were the monuments markers of territory, memorials to the dead, sacred shrines, or all three?


Recent discoveries continue to expand the known distribution of Deer Stones and reveal regional variations that challenge earlier interpretations. Archaeologists are increasingly using 3D scanning, digital mapping, and advanced dating techniques to uncover new clues.



A Legacy Written in Stone

The Deer Stones of Mongolia remain among the most beautiful and enigmatic monuments of the ancient world. Created by Bronze Age nomads who left no written histories, they stand as silent witnesses to a culture that once dominated the vast Eurasian steppe.

Their soaring deer, intricate carvings, and connection to ancient ritual landscapes continue to inspire wonder more than three millennia after they were erected. 


While archaeologists have uncovered much about the people who built them, the full meaning of the flying deer may remain one of prehistory's most enduring mysteries.
