Could some of our ancestors have spent far more of the Ice Age beneath the surface than we realise?
When we imagine humans during the Ice Age, we tend to picture hunters crossing frozen landscapes, wrapped in animal skins, tracking mammoths and reindeer across windswept plains.
It's an image that has become almost synonymous with prehistoric humanity.
But there is another possibility.
When conditions became brutally cold, perhaps the smartest place to be wasn't out on the frozen landscape at all.
Perhaps it was underground.
Humans have been using caves and rock shelters for hundreds of thousands of years. We know that Neanderthals, Denisovans and Homo sapiens repeatedly occupied caves, sometimes during extraordinarily cold climatic periods.
But this raises a more intriguing question:
Did some human groups retreat into underground environments for much longer periods during the most severe phases of the Ice Age?
The answer isn't as straightforward as it might first appear.
We know humans used caves
There is no mystery about whether prehistoric humans entered caves.
They did.
Caves have preserved some of the richest archaeological evidence of our distant ancestors — tools, animal bones, hearths, pigments, human remains and traces of repeated occupation.
Denisova Cave in Siberia is an extraordinary example.
The cave was occupied by Denisovans, Neanderthals and modern humans at different points, with archaeological and genetic evidence documenting human presence across hundreds of thousands of years. Researchers have even been able to reconstruct aspects of the climatic conditions experienced by these populations.
Elsewhere, caves provide evidence of humans living through periods of severe environmental change.
At Fumane Cave in northern Italy, early modern humans occupied the site around 42,000–41,000 years ago, including during a major cold climatic episode. Evidence suggests they adapted their subsistence strategies to a cold environment.
And at Ranis in Germany, modern humans were present around 45,000 years ago during extremely cold conditions.
The archaeological evidence indicates that these early populations were capable of operating in environments containing reindeer, woolly rhinoceros and other cold-adapted animals.
So our ancestors were demonstrably capable of surviving extreme cold. But that doesn't necessarily mean they lived underground continuously.
The difference between a cave shelter and an underground world
This distinction is important. A cave entrance provides protection from wind, precipitation and temperature fluctuations.
But a deep underground environment is a very different proposition.
There are questions of:
- ventilation
- smoke removal
- food supplies
- water
- sanitation
- lighting
- access
- predators
- waste
- social organisation
A small group could potentially use a cave for days, weeks or seasons.
A large population living permanently underground would leave a much larger archaeological footprint.
So the evidence currently supports repeated or prolonged cave occupation far more strongly than the idea of extensive subterranean civilisations.
And yet there is an interesting gap between those two possibilities.
What happened during the coldest periods?
The Last Glacial Maximum occurred roughly 26,000 to 19,000 years ago. It was not simply one enormous sheet of ice covering all of Europe. Some regions were heavily glaciated or extremely hostile, while others remained habitable refuges.
Archaeological research shows a patchwork pattern of human settlement, with populations concentrated in certain areas while large regions were abandoned.
That makes sense.
Hunter-gatherers don't need to remain in one location. They can move. They can follow animals. They can relocate when vegetation changes. They can exploit different environments seasonally.
And they can use caves as temporary or recurring refuges.
At Velika Pećina in Serbia, for example, humans used a cave during the Last Glacial Maximum, particularly around the period of peak glaciation. Archaeological evidence suggests small residential groups made brief visits over thousands of years.
This is significant. It demonstrates that caves weren't merely emergency shelters used during pleasant climatic periods. Humans were deliberately using them during some of the harshest environmental conditions of the Ice Age.
Could underground living have been a survival strategy?
This is where the evidence becomes more interesting. Imagine a landscape experiencing an extreme cold event. Temperatures fall. Wind increases. Vegetation changes. Large areas become less productive. Animals migrate.
A group living entirely in the open would be exposed to the elements.
But a cave provides something valuable: thermal stability. The temperature deep inside a cave changes much less dramatically than the temperature outside.
That doesn't make it warm. But it can make the environment considerably more predictable.
For a prehistoric community trying to conserve energy during extreme cold, that could have been pivotal to survival.
A cave could also provide a secure place for sleeping, storing materials and maintaining a fire. It could become a temporary base from which hunters ventured outside.
In other words, humans wouldn't necessarily have needed to become an underground species.
They could have lived above ground and used underground spaces strategically.
That may be the most realistic scenario.
But some caves were surprisingly large
There is another reason the idea is worth investigating. Not all caves are small holes in the ground.
Some contain enormous chambers, multiple entrances, underground rivers and extensive networks of passages.
A sufficiently large cave system could theoretically accommodate a substantial group.
But that immediately creates another question: Where is the evidence?
Large, long-term settlements should leave traces. Fireplaces. Food remains. Tools. Manufacturing debris. Human waste. Burials. Modified surfaces.
Repeated layers of occupation.
And archaeologists have indeed found such evidence in many caves.
But there is no established evidence of a vast, interconnected underground civilisation surviving the Ice Age.
The archaeological record supports underground occupation. It does not currently support underground civilisation.
The problem with fire
One of the biggest practical problems would have been fire. Fire was essential.
It provided heat, light and a way to cook food. But fire also produces smoke. In a confined underground environment, smoke can become lethal.
That means long-term occupation would require ventilation.
Natural cave systems sometimes provide this through multiple entrances, shafts and cracks.
A large cave with good airflow could therefore be far more suitable for human occupation than a narrow underground chamber.
But a sealed subterranean environment would be extremely difficult to inhabit safely.
This is one reason the image of an enormous Ice Age population living deep beneath the ground is difficult to reconcile with basic environmental constraints.
What about the evidence that disappears?
Here things get complicated. Archaeology is not a perfect record of the past. A cave can preserve evidence exceptionally well. But open-air settlements are vulnerable to erosion, flooding, glacial movement, soil development and later human activity.
An entire campsite can disappear. A landscape can be buried. A river can move. An advancing glacier can destroy everything that what was once there.
This creates an unavoidable problem: absence of evidence isn't always evidence of absence.
If an Ice Age group spent several months underground every year, we might expect to find evidence.
But if another group repeatedly used natural shelters, moved frequently and left relatively little behind, their archaeological footprint could be much harder to recognise.
Humans didn't simply hide from the Ice Age
There is another important clue. The archaeological record increasingly demonstrates that humans were remarkably adaptable.
At Ranis, early Homo sapiens survived extremely cold conditions around 45,000 years ago. The evidence suggests small, mobile groups exploited cold steppe environments rather than simply retreating from them.
This suggests that humans weren't necessarily helpless victims of the Ice Age.
They adapted. Clothing. Fire. Hunting technology. Shelter. Mobility. Knowledge of seasonal resources. And potentially caves.
The underground environment would therefore have been one tool among many.
Could there have been seasonal underground communities?
This may be the most plausible version of the mystery.
Imagine a community occupying a region for generations. During relatively mild periods, they spend much of their time outside. During severe winters or sudden cold events, they retreat into caves and rock shelters.
They store food. Maintain fires. Repair tools. Sleep in protected chambers. Venture outside to hunt. Return to shelter. Then, as conditions improve, they expand their activities back onto the surface.
Over generations, the cave becomes an important part of their territory. Not a permanent underground city. Something more practical.
A refuge.
And there is evidence consistent with this kind of repeated, seasonal cave use.
At Velika Pećina, researchers found evidence for brief human occupations during the Last Glacial Maximum, with the cave repeatedly used over thousands of years.
At Grotta del Romito in southern Italy, archaeological evidence indicates occupation extending through the Last Glacial Maximum and into later periods, making it one of the important records of human activity during the late glacial period.
What if we are looking for the wrong thing?
Perhaps the question shouldn't be: “Where is the lost underground civilisation?” Perhaps it should be: “How important were underground environments to human survival during extreme climate events?”
That is a much more interesting scientific question.
And it is one that archaeology can actually investigate. Scientists can examine cave sediments. They can date hearths. They can identify animal species. They can analyse microscopic traces. They can reconstruct ancient climates. They can examine DNA preserved in sediments.
They can determine whether humans were present during particular climatic events.
The more sophisticated these techniques become, the more detailed the picture of Ice Age life becomes.
And caves can preserve something extraordinary
A cave is effectively a time capsule. Outside, thousands of years of weather can erase traces of human activity. Inside, layers of sediment can accumulate relatively undisturbed.
A single cave can therefore contain evidence of repeated occupations separated by thousands of years.
Denisova Cave is a spectacular demonstration of this.
Researchers have combined archaeology, ancient DNA and sediment analysis to reconstruct a long sequence of hominin occupation and environmental change.
It means that the underground world isn't merely where evidence of the past happens to survive.
It can actually become the archive through which we discover that past.
Britain provides an intriguing example
Britain experienced enormous environmental changes during the Ice Age.
At different points, glaciers covered substantial portions of the country, while other areas consisted of cold, open landscapes.
Humans repeatedly moved into and out of Britain as climates changed.
Caves such as Gough's Cave provide important evidence of Late Upper Palaeolithic activity in Britain, although the archaeological record shows that occupation could be surprisingly brief and episodic.
This is important because it demonstrates how misleading a simple narrative of “people lived in caves during the Ice Age” can be.
Cave occupation could be temporary. Seasonal. Repeated. Or even associated with particular activities. Different caves served different purposes.
So could humans have lived underground?
Yes — in the limited sense that we know prehistoric humans lived and repeatedly sheltered in caves.
Could they have spent substantial periods underground during severe climatic conditions?
Absolutely plausible, and archaeological evidence demonstrates repeated cave use during cold phases.
Could entire communities have depended heavily on caves as refuges for extended periods?
Plausible in some environments, but difficult to quantify from the surviving evidence.
Could an advanced underground civilisation have survived beneath the Ice Age landscape?
There is currently no credible archaeological evidence for this.
And that final distinction is crucial. The real story doesn't need to be exaggerated.
It is already remarkable.
The deeper question
Perhaps the most fascinating aspect isn't whether humans disappeared underground. It's how adaptable our ancestors actually were.
They survived environments very different from those in which most humans live today. They endured cold. They crossed changing landscapes. They followed migrating animals. They developed technologies. They used fire. They constructed shelters.
And sometimes they went underground.
The Ice Age wasn't simply a period when humanity waited for the climate to improve. It was a period in which humans continually experimented with ways to survive a changing planet.
And perhaps caves were more important to that story than we currently understand.
The next time you see a dark cave entrance in a hillside, it is worth remembering what it represents.
Not necessarily a lost civilisation.
Not a hidden world beneath the Earth.
But potentially something far more believable — and in its own way more remarkable: a refuge that may once have meant the difference between survival and death.
And somewhere beneath today's landscape, the evidence may still be waiting to be found.
