When most people think about aircraft fuel, they picture the enormous quantities loaded into the wings of a long-haul airliner. What is less widely known is that, in an emergency, an aircraft may deliberately release some of that fuel into the atmosphere.
It is called fuel jettisoning, or fuel dumping.
It sounds like something that must happen frequently. In reality, it is remarkably rare — but there is an intriguing problem when you try to discover exactly how much fuel is released worldwide.
Nobody appears to have a comprehensive global total.
Why would an aircraft dump fuel?
Large aircraft can take off substantially heavier than they are permitted to be when landing.
That difference exists because landing places considerable loads on the aircraft's structure and landing gear. A fully fuelled long-haul aircraft returning shortly after departure may therefore be carrying far more fuel than it can safely land with.
If an emergency occurs — perhaps an engine problem, serious mechanical failure, structural problem or medical emergency — the crew may have to return to the airport almost immediately.
They then have two basic options: remain airborne long enough to burn fuel, or, if circumstances demand a rapid return, jettison fuel.
The FAA describes fuel jettisoning as a procedure used to reduce an aircraft's weight to its permitted landing weight. Its guidance requires pilots to advise air traffic control when dumping is necessary, allowing other aircraft to be warned and the area to be managed.
How much fuel can be released?
The quantities can be surprisingly large. A study conducted for the FAA examined 84 confirmed fuel-jettisoning occurrences. Only 20 records contained an actual quantity, illustrating one of the problems with trying to establish a global figure.
The available data showed an average of approximately 5,700 pounds (2.6 tonnes) for narrow-body aircraft and approximately 86,000 pounds (39 tonnes) for wide-body aircraft in the relevant cases. The researchers warned that the data were heavily skewed towards wide-body freighters returning to their departure airports, so these figures should not be regarded as universal averages.
The quantities involved can therefore range from a few tonnes to many tens of tonnes.
An FAA weight-and-balance example illustrates the scale particularly well.
In the example, an aircraft needs to lose 28,500 pounds of weight and, after accounting for fuel burned during the descent, needs to jettison about 26,500 pounds — roughly 12 tonnes — of fuel.
The aircraft's fuel-dump system releases fuel at approximately 2,300 pounds per minute in the example.
But how much is dumped worldwide?
This is where the story becomes considerably more difficult.
The FAA produced a specific report for Congress covering fuel dumps in the United States between fiscal years 2015 and 2020.
However, even government reporting does not provide a straightforward worldwide tonnage figure.
Historical estimates are available. A major National Academies assessment estimated that aircraft fuel jettisoning contributed approximately 7,500 tonnes of petroleum hydrocarbons per year worldwide to the marine environment.
That figure was not a global measurement programme. It was an estimate constructed from available information and assumptions about aircraft operations, fuel dumping and how much material would ultimately reach the sea. The assessment estimated that a typical fuel-dumping event could release around 50 tonnes of fuel, with approximately half potentially reaching the ocean surface in the circumstances examined.
That is an important distinction. 7,500 tonnes is an estimate — not a global annual fuel-dumping counter.
An older estimate suggests something else
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change also discussed the issue in its assessment of aviation and the atmosphere.
It described fuel jettisoning as a very rare emergency procedure, principally associated with larger long-haul aircraft. It also reported a British Airways estimate that approximately 0.01% of aviation fuel used each year was jettisoned.
That sounds tiny — and it is. But aviation consumes enormous quantities of fuel, meaning even a very small percentage can represent a substantial absolute quantity.
The IPCC nevertheless stressed the uncertainty surrounding the estimate, particularly concerning data from the former Soviet Union, and noted that the estimate did not include military operations.
Why don't we have better numbers?
It seems like something that should be relatively easy to measure. After all, an aircraft normally knows how much fuel it has onboard before and after a fuel dump.
But there is no single worldwide database into which every airline enters:

Fuel dumping is primarily an emergency safety procedure, rather than a routine environmental emission category.
The FAA's procedures are primarily concerned with safely managing the operation: where the aircraft will dump fuel, its altitude, surrounding aircraft and when the operation has finished.
The historical research also demonstrates just how incomplete the underlying data can be. In the FAA-sponsored study, only 20 of 84 confirmed occurrences contained usable fuel-dump weight information.
That makes calculating a worldwide annual total extremely difficult.
Does the fuel simply fall onto the ground?
Not usually as a pool of liquid aviation fuel.
Fuel jettison systems are designed to release fuel into the airstream, normally at altitude. The intention is that the fuel disperses into very small droplets and vapour rather than descending as a concentrated stream of liquid.
Aircraft operating procedures and air traffic control arrangements are intended to keep dumping away from populated areas where possible. The FAA's procedures specifically require information about the location and altitude of the dumping operation to be communicated to air traffic control.
That does not mean the fuel magically disappears.
It means that its physical form and fate change as it mixes with the atmosphere.
Some hydrocarbons evaporate and undergo atmospheric reactions; some may remain in particulate or droplet form for a time, and some can ultimately reach the surface.
The environmental consequences depend heavily on the altitude, atmospheric conditions, composition of the fuel and where the operation occurs.
Is fuel dumping a major source of aviation pollution?
No. This is perhaps the most important context. Commercial aircraft burn vastly more fuel through normal engine operation than they ever deliberately jettison.
Fuel dumping exists primarily because safety sometimes takes precedence over fuel conservation.
An aircraft with a serious emergency cannot necessarily spend several hours circling simply to burn enough fuel to reach its landing weight.
In that situation, releasing fuel may be the safest option.
The IPCC characterised fuel jettisoning as occurring during very rare emergency situations and described the quantity as relatively small in comparison with normal aviation fuel use.
The strange gap in the statistics
There is therefore an unusual contradiction. We know that fuel dumping happens. We know why it happens. We know that individual aircraft can release several tonnes — and potentially many tens of tonnes — during an emergency.
We also have historical estimates suggesting that thousands of tonnes of petroleum may have been released globally through aircraft jettisoning in a year.
Yet there is no simple, authoritative modern figure answering the question:
"How many tonnes of commercial aviation fuel were deliberately dumped worldwide last year?"
The available evidence instead consists of incident reports, individual measurements, national statistics, aviation studies and historical estimates.
A rare procedure with an enormous visual impact
Fuel dumping is also one of aviation's more misunderstood phenomena.
When people hear that an aircraft has "dumped fuel", it is easy to imagine thousands of litres raining down over a city.
The reality is considerably more complicated.
The fuel is released into the atmosphere under controlled circumstances, normally as part of an emergency procedure designed to reduce aircraft weight. Air traffic control can establish separation and issue warnings to other aircraft, while operational procedures attempt to minimise exposure to people on the ground.
And although the quantities involved in individual incidents can be enormous, the procedure itself is exceptionally uncommon compared with ordinary aircraft fuel consumption.
The unanswered question
Perhaps the most interesting part of the story is not that aircraft can dump tens of tonnes of fuel.
It is that we cannot easily say how much commercial aviation dumps worldwide today.
The historical estimates provide a useful indication of scale, but they are not a substitute for continuous global reporting.
A genuinely comprehensive database would need to record every jettisoning event, aircraft type, quantity released, altitude, location, atmospheric conditions and whether the aircraft was carrying passengers or cargo.
Until such a system exists, the best answer remains an estimate rather than a precise total.
And that leaves an unusual statistic hiding in plain sight:
Commercial aircraft consume millions of tonnes of fuel, yet one of the most dramatic ways aviation can release fuel is not routinely counted on a worldwide basis.
