Imagine standing in the middle of the ocean. There is no island on the horizon. No coastline. No lighthouse. No passing fishing boat. In every direction, land is thousands of kilometres away.
You are closer to the emptiness of the Pacific than to almost anywhere inhabited by humans.
This place exists.
It is known as Point Nemo — the oceanic pole of inaccessibility — and it lies in the remote South Pacific Ocean.
But Point Nemo is more than simply a dot on a map. It is one of the strangest geographical locations on Earth, a place where isolation becomes almost absolute.
And, remarkably, it has also become associated with something rather unusual: the final resting place of spacecraft.
Where exactly is Point Nemo?
Point Nemo lies at approximately 48°52.6′S, 123°23.6′W.
According to NOAA, the nearest land is roughly 2,688 kilometres away. Three pieces of land are approximately equally distant: Ducie Island in the Pitcairn Islands, Motu Nui near Easter Island, and Maher Island off Antarctica.
That distance is difficult to comprehend.
London to Moscow is roughly 2,500 kilometres.
At Point Nemo, you can travel about the same distance in almost any direction before encountering land.
There is no continental coastline nearby. No major island. No permanent settlement.
Just an enormous expanse of Pacific Ocean.
The name itself comes from literature. Nemo was the mysterious submarine captain in Jules Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.
It is an oddly appropriate name for somewhere that seems almost designed for a fictional explorer.
The middle of nowhere
Point Nemo isn't technically the centre of the Pacific. It is something more specific. It is the point in the world's oceans that is farthest from land.
Geographers call locations like this poles of inaccessibility.
The calculation is surprisingly simple in principle: find the point whose nearest piece of land is farther away than for any other point in the ocean.
The result is Point Nemo.
But there is an important distinction. Being the furthest point from land does not necessarily mean it is the most difficult place on Earth to reach under every possible definition.
Weather, sea conditions, currents, distance from ports and the capabilities of a vessel all matter.
Nevertheless, geographically, Point Nemo represents something extraordinary: maximum distance from solid ground.
You might actually be closer to astronauts
One of the strangest facts associated with Point Nemo concerns the International Space Station. At certain times, astronauts aboard the ISS can pass overhead at an altitude of roughly 400 kilometres.
That means that if you were floating at Point Nemo while the ISS passed directly above you, the astronauts could potentially be closer to you than the nearest humans on land.
The comparison is not always true — it depends on the ISS's position — but the underlying geography creates the possibility.
It is a perfect illustration of just how isolated this location is. The nearest humans aren't necessarily on another island. They could be orbiting hundreds of kilometres above your head.
Has Anyone Actually Been to Point Nemo?
You might assume that somewhere as famous as Point Nemo must attract a steady stream of explorers.
It doesn't.
In fact, there is no official visitor count for Point Nemo, and there is no permanent facility, tourist operation or regular transport service taking people there.
That makes a deceptively simple question surprisingly difficult to answer:
How many people have actually been there?
The problem is defining “been there”.
A research vessel could pass through the surrounding ocean without crossing the precise coordinates. A sailing boat might deliberately navigate to the location but never record its position publicly. Someone could cross the coordinates without even realising it.
And there is no geographical landmark waiting at the destination. There is no island. No sign saying Welcome to Point Nemo.
There is simply ocean.
A destination rather than a place
People who deliberately travel to Point Nemo generally do so as part of an expedition, sailing voyage or scientific mission.
One particularly unusual journey was undertaken by British explorer Chris Brown, who travelled to Point Nemo with his son during a 21-day Pacific voyage.
For sailors, reaching the point can become a challenge in itself — navigating thousands of kilometres across open ocean simply to arrive at an invisible coordinate.
Once there, there is nothing obvious to see.
There is no permanent official buoy marking Point Nemo. However, a temporary/artistic buoy installation has been placed at or associated with the coordinates, and scientific drifting buoys can also pass through the region.
The achievement is geographical rather than visual.
You have reached the point on Earth's ocean surface that is farther from land than anywhere else.
Could thousands of people have passed over it?
Probably not even that many. The surrounding South Pacific is enormous, and shipping density is extremely low compared with major ocean routes.
But there is an important caveat.
Nobody keeps a comprehensive register of every person or vessel that crosses the exact coordinates.
Consequently, claims that only a handful of people have ever visited Point Nemo should be treated cautiously unless they refer to documented expeditions.
What we can say with confidence is that deliberate human visits are exceptionally rare.
And that may actually make Point Nemo more interesting than a place with an impressive visitor statistic.
There isn't really anything to visit. There is only a coordinate.
The ultimate geographical achievement
Imagine spending weeks at sea, travelling thousands of kilometres through the Pacific, watching nothing but water and sky.
Then your navigation system tells you:
48°52.6′S, 123°23.6′W.
You've arrived.
There will be no dramatic landmark. No mountain. No ancient ruins. No mysterious island emerging from the horizon.
Just the same ocean that has surrounded you for days.
And yet you have reached one of the most extreme geographical locations on Earth.
Perhaps that is the real attraction of Point Nemo. It isn't somewhere people go because there is something there.
They go because there is almost nothing there at all.
Why is nobody living there?
There is no permanent settlement at Point Nemo. That shouldn't be surprising.
There is no land on which to build. There is no natural freshwater supply. There are no roads, runways or ports. Any expedition must bring virtually everything required for survival.
And then there is the sheer distance involved.
For sailors, Point Nemo represents an enormous logistical challenge rather than a destination. For scientists, however, remote regions of the ocean can be valuable precisely because they are remote.
They can provide opportunities to study ocean chemistry, currents, atmospheric interactions and marine ecosystems far from the direct influence of coastal populations.
The absence of people doesn't mean the area is lifeless.
The Pacific is still an ecosystem. It is simply one in which humans are almost completely absent.
The spacecraft cemetery
This is where Point Nemo becomes even stranger. The remote South Pacific surrounding Point Nemo has been used as a target area for controlled spacecraft reentries.
NASA describes a region of the Pacific as the “Spacecraft Cemetery”, where large spacecraft can be deliberately directed to re-enter Earth's atmosphere over an area far from populated regions.
Why? Because spacecraft are not always completely destroyed during atmospheric re-entry. Large objects can survive partially intact.
If one were allowed to fall randomly, there would be a small but unacceptable risk of debris reaching populated areas. Instead, mission planners can choose a remote region of the ocean.
Point Nemo and the surrounding South Pacific are ideal for this purpose because there is so little human activity.
The strategy has been used for decades. It is essentially a controlled disposal system for enormous pieces of technology.
The graveyard isn't literally a pile of spacecraft
There is an important misconception here. Point Nemo isn't a giant underwater junkyard containing hundreds of intact spacecraft sitting neatly on the seabed.
Most spacecraft targeted for re-entry are destroyed or heavily fragmented during atmospheric descent.
The “cemetery” is better understood as a designated remote impact region.
NASA has explained that large spacecraft and space stations can be guided toward remote areas of the Pacific so that surviving debris falls where the danger to people is minimised.
The region around Point Nemo has therefore acquired a peculiar dual identity. It is both: the place farthest from land and one of the places humans have chosen to send their largest pieces of obsolete space hardware.
Even the International Space Station is heading that way
The connection between Point Nemo and space hardware isn't merely historical.
NASA's planning for the eventual retirement of the International Space Station has included a controlled re-entry over the remote South Pacific.
NASA documentation describes the intended debris footprint as the South Pacific Oceanic Uninhabited Area, in the region around Point Nemo.
The logic is straightforward.
The ISS is enormous. It cannot simply be allowed to fall wherever atmospheric drag eventually brings it down.
Instead, operators can use controlled manoeuvres to influence its final trajectory and direct the surviving debris toward a sparsely populated region of the ocean.
The ultimate destination of one of humanity's greatest engineering projects will therefore be a remote patch of Pacific Ocean.
But what is beneath Point Nemo?
This is where imagination tends to take over. A location this remote seems like the perfect setting for a mystery.
What lies beneath the waves?
Could there be undiscovered species?
Unknown geological structures?
Ancient objects?
Something even stranger?
The reality is less cinematic but arguably more fascinating.
The ocean floor is not an empty flat surface. It contains ridges, trenches, volcanic structures, sediments and geological formations created over immense periods of time.
And while modern oceanographic technology allows researchers to investigate enormous areas remotely, our knowledge of the deep ocean remains incomplete.
The difficulty isn't necessarily that scientists believe something extraordinary is hiding at Point Nemo. It is that the deep ocean is physically difficult and expensive to investigate.
We have mapped much of the broad structure of the seafloor using satellites and sonar, but detailed exploration at individual locations is another matter entirely.
Could something be hiding there?
Possibly. But “possible” and “evidence” are very different things.
There is currently no credible evidence that Point Nemo conceals an ancient civilisation, a secret underwater structure or anything else supernatural.
The attraction comes largely from the location itself. It is so remote that it feels like a natural boundary between the known and unknown.
And that makes it an interesting reminder of how much of Earth's environment remains difficult to access.
We have spacecraft exploring other planets. We have telescopes observing galaxies billions of light-years away.
Yet kilometres beneath our own oceans, environments remain challenging enough that direct exploration is still comparatively rare.
The irony of Point Nemo
Perhaps the strangest thing about Point Nemo is the contrast.
It is one of the most isolated places on Earth. And yet humanity has deliberately turned it into a destination for some of our most advanced machines.
Satellites observe the planet from orbit. Spacecraft travel beyond Earth. Then, when some of those machines reach the end of their lives, we sometimes bring them back down toward one of the loneliest places on the planet.
The result is almost poetic.
Technology carries us into space. And eventually, some of that technology comes home to the most remote ocean on Earth.
The last place on Earth?
Point Nemo isn't the “edge of the world”. There is no mysterious boundary there. No geographical anomaly. No evidence that it hides anything supernatural.
It is simply the mathematical consequence of Earth's distribution of land and water.
But that doesn't make it boring.
Quite the opposite. Point Nemo demonstrates how enormous our planet really is.
A person could stand on Earth and still be thousands of kilometres from the nearest piece of land. And beneath the waves lies an environment that remains extraordinarily difficult for humans to explore.
Perhaps the real mystery of Point Nemo isn't what might be hiding there. Perhaps it is the fact that a place this remote exists on our own planet at all.
We often imagine that humanity has conquered Earth. Point Nemo is a useful reminder that we haven't.
There are still places where the planet feels bigger than us. And somewhere in the middle of the South Pacific, there is a point where the nearest piece of land is almost 2,700 kilometres away.
A lonely coordinate. A spacecraft graveyard. And perhaps one of the closest things Earth has to a true middle of nowhere.
