The Haunted Railway Tunnel Where Workers Refused to Go Back

In 1847, railway workers in northern England began hearing the sound of a pickaxe coming from underground — apparently from the very place where a navvy had recently been killed. Then one man was lowered into the tunnel to find out what was making the noise.

There are railway ghost stories that seem to have been invented decades after the event.

And then there are stories that appeared in print while the railway age was still young.


One particularly strange example appeared in an 1847 newspaper under the wonderfully understated heading “A Railway Ghost.”

It concerned a railway construction site near Stockham, where a worker had recently been killed when part of a tunnel collapsed.


Not long afterwards, the men working nearby began hearing something that should not have been there.

It sounded like someone working underground. A pickaxe striking rock. Again. And again. And again.


The disturbing part was where the sound appeared to be coming from. It seemed to originate from the precise location where the dead man had been working.



The railway that was still being built

Britain's railway boom of the 1840s was an extraordinary period of construction.

Thousands of labourers — commonly known as navvies — were employed digging cuttings, excavating tunnels and constructing embankments.


The work was brutally difficult and often dangerous.

The National Railway Museum notes that railway construction in the period could involve appalling working conditions, with inadequate safety measures and a very high death toll. The construction of the Woodhead Tunnel, for example, became notorious for its mortality rate.


Tunnels were particularly hazardous.

Workers operated underground with primitive lighting, explosives and heavy tools while excavating unstable ground. A collapse could bury a man in seconds.


That is what happened at the site described in the 1847 account.

A man died beneath the railway

The newspaper report, published by the Northern Star on 27 November 1847, described an incident on the Lancashire, Cheshire and Birmingham Railway near Stockham.

The railway's operations had apparently been largely suspended, with a small number of men remaining to carry out necessary excavation work.


Then tragedy struck.


About a month before the strange events, a section of the tunnel had collapsed and a man was killed. The remaining workers subsequently returned to the area.

And that was when they began hearing the noise.


According to the contemporary report, they heard what they believed to be the sound of a pickaxe being used at the very spot where the man had died.


At first, there was an obvious possibility. Perhaps another worker was underground.

But the men could not find anyone responsible for the sound. 


And it continued.



The sound in the darkness

The newspaper described the noise as remarkably consistent. The men heard what it called the “monotonous sound” of the dead man's work. There was something particularly unsettling about that description.

It wasn't simply an unexplained bang. It wasn't a single mysterious noise. It apparently sounded like someone repeatedly doing the same physical job.

A pickaxe striking the tunnel. The same task. The same location. The same rhythm. And the coincidence was difficult for the workers to ignore. The man who had died had been working there. Now something sounded as though it was continuing his work.



Eventually, someone volunteered

The men decided that somebody had to investigate. According to the contemporary newspaper report, they agreed that one of them should descend into the tunnel and find out what was happening.

The arrangement was remarkably practical. A rope was fastened around the volunteer's waist. His companions remained above. If he encountered anything dangerous, he was to give a signal and they would immediately pull him back up.


One man apparently volunteered with considerable confidence, boasting that he feared neither man nor devil.

It was the sort of bravado that sounds impressive until the rope begins lowering you into a dark tunnel where someone has recently died.


And then something happened.

Before the man had even reached the bottom, the people above heard a cry. The rope suddenly jerked. Something had frightened him.



What did he see?

This is where the story becomes considerably stranger. Later accounts of the incident describe the investigating worker as claiming that he had seen the white figure of the dead man underground.

The apparition was apparently associated with the same place from which the mysterious pickaxe sounds had been coming.


It is important, however, to separate the surviving evidence. The contemporary newspaper report establishes that:

a railway worker had been killed in a tunnel collapse;

workers subsequently heard what they believed was a pickaxe;

the sound appeared to come from the area of the accident;

one man was lowered into the tunnel to investigate;

he became frightened and was hauled back out.


The more elaborate version — including the explicit identification of a white ghostly figure — appears in later retellings of the incident rather than being fully preserved in the surviving newspaper text.

That distinction matters.

It is one of the reasons this story is more interesting than simply repeating it as fact.



The explanation was almost disappointingly mundane

The story might have ended there. The workers had heard the dead man's ghost continuing his unfinished labour. Someone had gone down. Something had frightened him. Ghost. Case closed.


Except there was another explanation. And it involved something considerably less supernatural.


Later accounts identify the mysterious sound as being caused by a small metal powder can being moved around by the wind underground.

In the strange acoustics of the tunnel, the object could apparently strike against the surrounding rock and produce a noise remarkably similar to someone working with a pickaxe. The story has subsequently been discussed by historian Owen Davies in The Haunted: A Social History of Ghosts.


If that explanation is correct, it provides a fascinating example of how easily a completely natural phenomenon can become transformed into a ghost story.


But it doesn't necessarily explain everything.



The problem with the explanation

A tin object being blown around could potentially explain the sound.

It does not automatically explain the frightened reaction of the man who descended into the tunnel. Nor does it establish precisely what he thought he saw.


That doesn't prove that he saw a ghost. There are plenty of possibilities. The darkness could have distorted his perception. The strange noise could already have primed him to expect something frightening. Dust, smoke, reflected light or movement in the confined space might have created an illusion.

And once the workers had connected the noise with their dead colleague, the psychological effect could have been powerful.


There is another important factor.

Tunnels are extraordinary acoustic environments. Sound can travel around corners, reverberate from hard surfaces and become almost impossible to locate accurately.

A relatively small object striking rock could therefore produce a surprisingly convincing impression of activity somewhere deeper inside the excavation.



Why the story matters

The intriguing part of this case isn't necessarily whether a ghost existed. It is that we can watch the ghost story being created.

There is a documented death. There is an unexplained sound. The sound appears to originate from the place where the death occurred.

The workers associate the two events. Someone investigates. He becomes frightened. And so an explanation is eventually offered.


That is almost a blueprint for how occupational ghost folklore develops.

Researchers studying British ghost traditions have found that stories associated with particular workplaces can become part of the culture of the people who work there. Railway workers, in particular, have accumulated a huge body of folklore involving apparitions, strange sounds and apparently impossible encounters.


In that sense, the Stockham story is valuable even if the supernatural explanation is rejected. It tells us something about the people who built Britain's railways.



The ghosts of the railway age

The early railway network was built at enormous human cost.

Men spent long hours underground, often in darkness, around explosives, unstable rock and machinery that could maim or kill them.


Death was not an abstract possibility. It was part of the working environment.

It is therefore hardly surprising that railway folklore became populated by dead workers who supposedly continued to appear at the places where they had died.


The idea is almost poetic. A navvy dies while digging a tunnel. His work remains unfinished. Years later, people hear the sound of his tools.

The dead man, according to the legend, has simply continued working.


It is a particularly Victorian form of haunting: the ghost as an unfinished worker.



A story with two endings

There are really two ways to end the Stockham story.

The first is the supernatural version. A railway worker died underground. His companions later heard his pickaxe striking the rock. One brave man descended to investigate.

And somewhere in the darkness, the dead man appeared to be still working.


The second ending is much more mundane.

The wind moved a metal container against the rocks. The tunnel transformed that movement into an eerie, repetitive sound.

The workers already knew that a man had died there. Fear did the rest.


Neither explanation can be demonstrated with complete certainty from the surviving evidence. And that uncertainty is precisely what makes the story worth remembering.



The real mystery

There is something particularly compelling about a ghost story that survives because someone actually tried to investigate it.

The men didn't simply hear a noise and walk away. They lowered one of their own into the darkness. He was frightened badly enough to be pulled back out.

More than 175 years later, we can still trace the basic story back to a contemporary newspaper account.


We can also find a plausible physical explanation for at least part of what happened.

But we cannot reconstruct exactly what the terrified worker experienced at the bottom of that tunnel.


Perhaps he saw nothing more than darkness and mist. Perhaps the strange noise produced a powerful illusion. Perhaps the later ghost story added details that were never present originally.

Or perhaps, somewhere beneath the railway, the men really did hear something that sounded exactly like the tool of a dead colleague striking stone.


The newspaper called it a railway ghost. History has never completely managed to bury the story.
