The Bones Beneath the Cliffs: A Lost Burial Site Emerges on Cornwall's Lizard

On a remote stretch of Cornwall's southern coast, where the cliffs meet some of the most treacherous waters around Britain, a discovery made by a seven-year-old has opened an unexpected archaeological mystery.

In August 2025, a young visitor named Arthur was exploring Lizard Point when he noticed several teeth in the ground. He showed one to Ken Wallace, a National Trust Wildlife Watchpoint volunteer who happened to be a retired dentist.


Wallace immediately recognised something unusual.

The tooth was human.


What followed transformed an ordinary family visit into the beginning of an archaeological investigation. A police cordon was initially established, but the remains were soon confirmed to be historic rather than evidence of a recent death. National Trust archaeologist Jim Parry was brought in to investigate.


What he found was considerably more complicated than a single forgotten skeleton.



A burial emerging from the cliff

The remains were being exposed by erosion from a mound or raised area near the coast. Fragments of jawbone, teeth and skull were found, with additional human remains becoming visible as the surrounding ground gradually disappeared.


At first, there was a tantalising possibility. The burial might have been prehistoric.

The location and appearance of the remains raised the possibility of a Bronze Age burial, perhaps dating back as much as 4,000 years. Initial interpretations even considered whether the site might represent some form of ancient burial mound.


But the archaeology quickly became more complicated.

Rather than finding a neatly preserved ancient grave, investigators encountered a jumble of human bones. The evidence suggested that some remains might have been moved or reburied at some point in the past. A National Trust account published during the initial investigation noted the possibility that bones had been relocated from elsewhere, perhaps during historical work around the site.


The question therefore changed.

Instead of simply asking “How old are these bones?”, archaeologists also had to ask:

Why were these people buried here, and were they originally buried somewhere else?

Five individuals

Further excavation produced an even more remarkable result.

During a week-long excavation in November, archaeologists uncovered the remains of five individuals within a relatively small section of the site. The burials were oriented east to west, and there were no surviving items of clothing or other artefacts buried with them.


This arrangement provided an important clue.

The National Trust now considers it highly probable that the individuals were victims of a shipwreck.


Lizard Point has a long and notorious association with wrecks. It occupies the southernmost tip of mainland Britain, overlooking busy sea routes where ships have historically encountered reefs, rocks, currents and violent Atlantic weather.


If the interpretation is correct, the bones may not represent an ancient ceremonial cemetery at all.

They could belong to people who died at sea.



The shipwreck theory

There is something particularly poignant about the possibility. A ship goes down somewhere off the Cornish coast. Bodies are recovered. The dead need to be buried.

At some point, perhaps because the victims cannot be identified or because the wreck occurred in an isolated location, they are placed in a nearby burial ground.


Centuries later, erosion begins removing the soil above them. Eventually, a child's holiday discovery brings their existence back to light.


That scenario would fit the coastal setting exceptionally well, but it remains an interpretation rather than a proven explanation.


The National Trust has stressed that only a small portion of the burial area has so far been investigated, meaning the full extent of the site remains unknown.



What happened to the prehistoric theory?

One of the most intriguing aspects of the discovery is how dramatically the interpretation changed.

The initial evidence raised the possibility of a prehistoric burial, potentially dating back thousands of years. The subsequent discovery of five individuals, their apparent east-west orientation and the absence of associated artefacts shifted attention towards a much later maritime explanation.


That does not completely eliminate the possibility of earlier burials.

The site could potentially have a complicated history involving more than one period. There may have been an older monument or burial ground here that was later reused.

Alternatively, the apparent prehistoric characteristics could simply have been misleading.


Only scientific dating can begin to resolve the question.



The race against erosion

There is another factor making the investigation urgent.

The site is being gradually destroyed by the sea.


Coastal erosion is already exposing archaeological material, and every winter storm has the potential to remove more of the surviving evidence. The National Trust therefore faces a difficult choice: excavate material before it disappears or allow parts of the site to remain in place while accepting that nature may eventually destroy it.

During the investigation, the most vulnerable remains were carefully removed.


One complete skeleton and one skull were taken for further examination and radiocarbon dating because of their exposure and vulnerability to continued erosion.

The remaining area has been temporarily protected while archaeologists consider how best to investigate the wider site.



Why radiocarbon dating matters

The bones themselves cannot tell us their exact age simply by looking at them. Radiocarbon dating offers a much more precise way of establishing when the individuals died.

If the results point towards the Bronze Age, the entire story changes. The site could represent an ancient burial tradition or monument that has survived largely unnoticed on the Lizard.


If the remains prove to be only a few centuries old, the shipwreck theory becomes much stronger.

And if different individuals produce substantially different dates, an even more complicated story could emerge. The site could have been used repeatedly over a long period.


As of the latest National Trust information, the organisation has said that radiocarbon results will be shared when available, while further excavation will be assessed in light of those findings.



A coastline full of wrecks

Lizard Point is an appropriate location for such a mystery. The headland projects into one of the most exposed stretches of Britain's coastline. Its spectacular scenery disguises a dangerous maritime environment, and the surrounding waters have claimed numerous ships over the centuries.


There is already evidence of organised burial associated with wreck victims nearby.

The National Trust's Lizard Point walking route passes Pistol Meadow, described as the burial site of more than 200 people who died when the troopship Royal Anne was wrecked on offshore reefs in 1720.


That historical context makes the shipwreck interpretation of the newly discovered remains particularly compelling.

But it does not tell us which wreck, if any, the five individuals belonged to.



Could the dead be identified?

For the moment, there is no definitive answer.

The remains may eventually provide information about age, sex, health, ancestry, diet and geographic origins. Scientific analysis can sometimes reveal where an individual spent their childhood through chemical signatures preserved in teeth and bones.


Such evidence could potentially distinguish local people from individuals who came from elsewhere.

That could be extremely valuable here. If the remains belonged to sailors or passengers from a distant country, the discovery could potentially be connected to a particular wreck or historical event.

If they were local people, another explanation would have to be considered.



A mystery created by the landscape

There is an irony to the discovery. The people buried at Lizard Point may have disappeared from history precisely because their graves were never intended to become monuments.

Over time, memories faded. The landscape changed. The burial site became just another part of the Cornish coast. Then erosion began to reverse the process. The sea started exposing what the ground had concealed.


First came a tooth. Then a jaw. Then skull fragments. Then more bones. And eventually, archaeologists realised that they were looking at the remains of several people.



What lies beyond the excavation?

The most tantalising question may now be the simplest:

How large is the burial site?


The National Trust has emphasised that only a small part of the area has been examined. Further excavation could reveal additional individuals, burial structures or evidence explaining why the site was used.


There may even be evidence connecting the burials to a specific shipwreck.

Alternatively, the excavation could produce an entirely unexpected explanation.


The initial assumption that the remains might be prehistoric has already been challenged by subsequent discoveries. Archaeology has a habit of doing exactly that: turning apparently simple finds into complicated stories.



The bones the sea gave back

For now, the Lost Bones of Lizard Point remain an unfinished story.

A seven-year-old looking for something interesting on a Cornish holiday happened to notice a handful of teeth. A retired dentist recognised them. An archaeologist investigated.

And beneath the eroding ground, five individuals were eventually revealed.


They may have died hundreds of years ago in one of the many shipwrecks that made Lizard Point notorious.

They may represent something older. Or the site may contain several layers of history that have yet to be disentangled.


What is certain is that the coastline is not going to wait. Every storm, every season of erosion and every movement of the cliff has the potential to destroy evidence that could answer the mystery.


For centuries, the dead remained hidden beneath the Cornish earth.

Now the sea is giving them back.


The question is whether archaeology can discover who they were before the coastline takes the rest of the story away.
