1. Elephants and Fermented Marula Fruit
African elephants are often linked to stories about consuming fermented marula fruit. While the idea of large herds becoming intoxicated remains controversial, elephants do eat fallen fruit that can undergo fermentation. The association has made them one of the most famous examples of animals interacting with naturally occurring alcohol.
2. Capuchin Monkeys and Millipede Toxins
Capuchin monkeys have been observed handling and chewing certain millipedes before rubbing the secretions onto their fur. Researchers believe this behaviour helps repel insects and parasites. The chemicals involved may also produce unusual sensory effects, making this one of the most intriguing examples of animal self-medication.
3. Jaguars and Ayahuasca Vine
In parts of the Amazon, jaguars have been observed chewing the roots of the ayahuasca vine (Banisteriopsis caapi). The behaviour appears unusual because the plant is not a typical food source. Scientists do not fully understand why jaguars seek it out, but the observations have attracted significant attention from researchers and indigenous communities alike.

Cedar waxwings frequently feed on berries that have fermented naturally after remaining on branches during warm weather. Koalas survive almost entirely on eucalyptus leaves, which contain a range of potent chemical compounds. Mountain ibex are known for scaling steep cliffs to reach mineral deposits and salt-rich rock faces. In some regions, stories persist of ibex seeking out unusual plant resins or chemically rich surfaces. While many claims remain unverified, the behaviour highlights the remarkable lengths animals will go to obtain valuable compounds from their environment.
