The Three-Eyed Calf of Wales: The Strange Story of Mahadev

In 2021, a vet carrying out routine testing on a farm in North Wales made an extraordinary discovery: a calf with what appeared to be a fully formed third eye in the middle of its forehead. 

The animal would eventually be rescued from slaughter and given the name Mahadev, after the Hindu deity Shiva. But what could cause an animal to develop an extra eye?


There are countless stories of strange animals, unusual births and supposed creatures with extraordinary abilities. Many turn out to be exaggerated, misidentified or outright hoaxes.

The three-eyed calf discovered in North Wales, however, was something different.

It was real.


In May 2021, veterinarian Malan Hughes, from Pwllheli, was carrying out routine tuberculosis testing on cattle at a farm on the Llŷn Peninsula in Gwynedd when she noticed something unusual about one of the calves.


It had three eyes. The animal had the normal pair of eyes on either side of its head, but between them, positioned in the centre of its forehead, was a third structure that appeared remarkably similar to an eye.

Hughes photographed the calf and initially continued with her work. It was only afterwards, when she began researching just how unusual the condition was, that she realised she had encountered something exceptionally rare.


"I've never seen anything like it"

The farmer, Jake Jones, reportedly reared around 3,000 calves a year. Yet even with that experience, the animal was completely outside anything he had previously encountered.

When he asked the vet what the strange structure was, the answer was surprisingly straightforward: It was an eye.


Hughes said she had encountered other severe congenital abnormalities in animals, including animals born with two heads and lambs displaying cyclopia, but she had never personally seen an animal with three eyes.


The calf otherwise appeared healthy.

It behaved normally and did not appear to be suffering any obvious problems as a result of the abnormality. The additional eye even appeared surprisingly well developed externally.

According to Hughes, it had eyelids and eyelashes and appeared moist, suggesting that some form of lubrication was being produced.


But there was one major unanswered question.

Could the third eye actually see?


Nobody could establish whether the extra eye was functional. Although it looked like an eye from the outside, that did not necessarily mean that it possessed all the internal structures required for vision.

Hughes explained that it was impossible to determine from the outside whether anything was actually functioning behind the eye. The calf itself did not behave differently from other calves, giving no obvious indication that it could see through the additional organ.

That uncertainty makes the case particularly fascinating.


The animal wasn't simply born with a strange lump or malformed piece of tissue. It possessed something sufficiently eye-like to be recognised as an eye by an experienced veterinarian.

But biologically, how could such a thing happen?


A developmental accident

There is no evidence that the calf's third eye was supernatural. The most likely explanation is a congenital developmental abnormality — an error occurring during embryonic development.


The formation of the face, brain and sensory organs is an extraordinarily complicated process. During embryonic development, cells must migrate, divide and differentiate in precisely coordinated ways.

Small disruptions can sometimes produce dramatic anatomical differences.


One particularly important developmental pathway involves the Sonic hedgehog (SHH) signalling system, which plays a major role in establishing the midline of the developing embryo and helping determine how structures such as the eyes and brain are organised.

Severe disruption of this process can produce holoprosencephaly, in which the developing forebrain fails to divide normally. One of the most extreme manifestations is cyclopia, where the eyes are fused or represented by a single central eye.


The Welsh calf was clearly not a typical case of cyclopia: it had two normal eyes as well as an additional central structure.

Without detailed genetic and anatomical examination, however, it would be inappropriate to claim that a particular gene or mutation caused this individual animal's condition.


What can be said with confidence is that the third eye represents an extremely unusual developmental abnormality.

Nature occasionally produces anatomical arrangements that seem almost impossible — not because biology has broken its rules, but because development is sufficiently complex that rare errors can result in extraordinary outcomes.


From farm animal to "Mahadev"

There was another remarkable chapter to the story.

Initially, the calf appeared destined for the same fate as other cattle being raised for meat. Then news of the animal reached the Jain Animal Sanctuary.

The sanctuary offered £5,000 to purchase the calf and save it from slaughter. The offer was accepted, and the unusual animal was subsequently taken to a sanctuary in Leicester.


The calf was given a new name: Mahadev.

The name is associated with Shiva, one of the principal deities of Hinduism.

Shiva is traditionally depicted with a third eye in the centre of his forehead. In Hindu tradition, Shiva's third eye has profound symbolic meanings, including knowledge, spiritual insight and the destruction of ignorance.

The resemblance between the deity's traditional appearance and the Welsh calf was therefore impossible to overlook.


The sanctuary considered the animal particularly significant because of this unusual characteristic and wanted to ensure that it would be cared for rather than sent to slaughter.


It is important, however, to distinguish religious interpretation from biological explanation. There is no scientific evidence that the calf was an incarnation of Shiva or that its third eye possessed supernatural abilities.

What happened instead is arguably just as interesting: an extraordinarily rare biological abnormality acquired a powerful cultural meaning because it happened to resemble one of the most recognisable characteristics of a major religious figure.


It wasn't the first three-eyed calf

The Welsh case also had an intriguing precedent. Several years earlier, reports emerged from Tamil Nadu, India, of another calf born with a third eye.

That animal was named Shiva and attracted large numbers of people who regarded its unusual appearance as a religious sign. Other three-eyed calves have subsequently been reported in India as well.

Such cases can become religious phenomena because the third eye has a very specific cultural association with Shiva.


In Wales, however, the circumstances were dramatically different. There was no expectation that a three-eyed calf would appear. A veterinarian simply happened to notice an extraordinary abnormality during an otherwise routine farm visit.



A mystery with a scientific answer?

The three-eyed Welsh calf presents an interesting problem for anyone fascinated by unexplained phenomena.

At first glance, it looks like something from mythology. A calf is born with an eye in the centre of its forehead — almost exactly where the third eye of Shiva is traditionally depicted.


That coincidence is undeniably striking. But the available evidence doesn't require a supernatural explanation.

The animal's unusual anatomy can be understood as a rare congenital developmental abnormality. What remains uncertain is exactly how that particular abnormality occurred and whether the additional eye was capable of seeing.


And perhaps that is the most interesting part.

Science can explain many aspects of the story without making the event any less extraordinary.


A genuine biological oddity

The three-eyed calf of Wales was not an internet hoax, a manipulated photograph or a mythical creature.

It was a real animal, photographed by a veterinarian in Gwynedd in 2021 and independently reported by multiple news organisations.

Its third eye appeared externally well formed, complete with eyelids and eyelashes, while the animal itself appeared healthy and behaved normally.


Its ultimate fate was also unusual.

Instead of entering the food chain, the calf was purchased for £5,000 and given sanctuary. It was renamed Mahadev, creating an extraordinary link between a rare Welsh birth defect and one of the most enduring religious symbols in Hinduism.


Whether viewed as a remarkable example of developmental biology, an extraordinary coincidence or something with spiritual significance, the story of Wales' three-eyed calf demonstrates something that continually fascinates us:

Sometimes reality produces things that look as though they belong in mythology. And occasionally, the strangest stories really are true.


The Mystery Remains

We know the calf existed. We know that the third structure genuinely resembled an eye. We know that it appeared healthy and behaved normally. We know that nobody established whether the additional eye could actually see. And we know that its remarkable appearance ultimately saved it from slaughter.

What we don't know is precisely how the extra eye developed, what anatomical structures existed behind it, or whether it possessed any visual function whatsoever.



For a creature that seemed to have been given a "third eye", perhaps the most appropriate conclusion is also the simplest:

We can explain much of what happened — but not every detail.
