The Jōmon Civilisation of Japan: The Ancient Culture That Defied Expectations

When discussing the world's earliest civilisations, attention often focuses on Mesopotamia, Egypt, China or the Indus Valley. 

Yet long before many famous kingdoms emerged, a remarkable culture flourished across the Japanese archipelago.


Known as the Jōmon civilisation, this ancient society existed for thousands of years, leaving behind intricate pottery, sophisticated settlements and mysterious ritual objects that continue to intrigue archaeologists today. 

Beginning around 14,000 BC and lasting until approximately 300 BC, the Jōmon period represents one of the longest continuous cultural traditions in human history.

Despite lacking large cities, monumental architecture or agriculture on the scale seen elsewhere, they developed complex societies, rich spiritual traditions and artistic achievements that were far ahead of their time.

Who Were the Jōmon People?

The term Jōmon means "cord-marked" and refers to the distinctive patterns impressed into their pottery using twisted cords.

The Jōmon people inhabited Japan for thousands of years, adapting to changing climates and environments while maintaining a surprisingly stable cultural identity. They lived primarily as hunter-gatherers, relying on fishing, hunting and the collection of nuts, fruits and other wild foods.


Unlike many prehistoric societies that were constantly on the move, many Jōmon communities established long-term settlements. Some villages were occupied for generations, suggesting a degree of social organisation not typically associated with hunter-gatherer cultures.

This has led some researchers to describe the Jōmon as one of the world's earliest examples of a complex sedentary society.



The World's Oldest Pottery?

Among the most remarkable achievements of the Jōmon people is their pottery.

Archaeological evidence suggests that some Jōmon ceramics may be among the oldest known pottery ever produced, dating back more than 16,000 years. These vessels appeared long before agriculture became widespread in many parts of the world.

Archaeologists generally interpret the figurines as ritual objects connected to fertility, protection, healing or spiritual beliefs. Many have been found intentionally broken, suggesting they may have played a role in ceremonies.

Large Settlements and Social Complexity

For many years, scholars assumed prehistoric hunter-gatherers lived in small, temporary camps.

The discovery of large Jōmon settlements challenged this view.

Sites such as Sannai-Maruyama reveal substantial communities featuring pit dwellings, storage facilities and communal structures. These settlements indicate long-term occupation and sophisticated planning.

Items made from obsidian, jade and other valuable materials have been found far from their original sources, demonstrating the movement of goods and ideas throughout ancient Japan.

Although the Jōmon left no written records, their artefacts provide clues about their spiritual world.

Many researchers believe Nature played a central role in Jōmon belief systems. Mountains, forests, rivers and animals may have been viewed as possessing spiritual significance.

Stone circles, ritual objects and ceremonial figurines suggest complex religious practices that evolved over thousands of years.


Some scholars see echoes of these ancient traditions in later Japanese spiritual beliefs, though direct connections remain difficult to prove.

The lack of written evidence means much of the Jōmon worldview remains hidden behind the veil of prehistory.

Advances in genetic research have shed new light on the Jōmon population.

Studies suggest that the Jōmon represented a distinct ancestral group that lived in Japan for thousands of years before later migrations from mainland Asia introduced new populations and technologies.

Why Did the Jōmon Period End?

Around 300 BC, Japan entered a new era known as the Yayoi period.

This transition brought significant changes, including wet-rice agriculture, metalworking and new social structures introduced from the Asian mainland.


The shift did not occur overnight. Instead, it appears to have involved gradual interaction between existing Jōmon communities and incoming populations.

Over time, the distinctive Jōmon way of life largely disappeared, though elements of its cultural legacy may have endured.

The exact nature of this transformation remains a subject of ongoing research.
