Gilmerton Cove: Edinburgh’s Underground Mystery

Beneath the streets of Gilmerton, on the southern edge of Edinburgh, lies a place that seems strangely out of step with its surroundings. 

Hidden beneath an unassuming building is a complex of narrow passages, chambers, benches, tables and other features carved directly into the sandstone bedrock.


Known as Gilmerton Cove, the underground complex has fascinated antiquarians, archaeologists and curious visitors for more than two centuries. Its physical existence is not mysterious: someone clearly excavated it by hand. What remains uncertain is exactly when it was created, who created it and what they originally intended it for.

And that uncertainty has allowed an extraordinary collection of theories to grow around it.



A subterranean complex beneath Gilmerton

The Cove consists of several interconnected spaces cut into the underlying sandstone. Historic Environment Scotland describes a principal passage approximately 40 feet long, with rooms branching from either side. A flight of twelve steps leads down to roughly ten feet below ground level.

Inside are some of its most remarkable features.

Tables and benches have been carved from the living rock, including a substantial table in one of the principal chambers. There are fireplaces, recesses, passages and other carefully shaped features that make the place look less like a simple quarry and more like an underground building.

The workmanship is particularly intriguing because the excavators did not simply remove stone to create an empty cavity. They appear to have deliberately shaped parts of the remaining rock into useful objects and architectural features.


It is this combination of craftsmanship and uncertainty that has made Gilmerton Cove so compelling.



The story of George Paterson

For much of its recorded history, the Cove has been associated with a local man named George, or Thomas, Paterson, traditionally described as a blacksmith.

An account recorded by the Reverend Thomas Whyte in 1792 stated that Paterson excavated the Cove and completed the work in 1724 after approximately five years of labour. According to the same tradition, Paterson and his family lived there and the underground rooms soon became a curiosity visited by outsiders.

There is an important historical clue here.


The Cove was already attracting attention by the early 1720s. Contemporary records indicate that Paterson was accused of selling alcohol there on a Sunday, suggesting that the subterranean rooms were being used socially almost from the beginning of their documented history.

This has led to the relatively mundane interpretation that the Cove was essentially an unusual underground drinking establishment or private meeting place.


But there was a problem.

Some later investigators became convinced that Paterson could not have been responsible for everything beneath Gilmerton.



The antiquarian who questioned the official story

In the late nineteenth century, Frederick R. Coles of the National Museum of Antiquities investigated the Cove.

Coles was sceptical of the traditional story that the entire complex had been created in the eighteenth century. He noted similarities between Gilmerton Cove and other rock-cut structures in the surrounding region and questioned whether Paterson had actually excavated it.


The possibility therefore emerged that Paterson had discovered and reused an existing underground structure, rather than creating it himself.

That idea transformed the mystery.


If the Cove really predated the eighteenth century, how old was it?

And what had it originally been used for?



The medieval and prehistoric theories

Over the years, Gilmerton Cove has acquired an impressive catalogue of possible explanations.

It has been suggested that it might have been used by Covenanters, smugglers or secret groups. Other theories have imagined it as a clandestine meeting place or even an underground site associated with the notorious Hellfire Club.


Some interpretations have gone much further.

A 2019 paper in the Scottish Archaeological Journal proposed that the Cove might actually have an Iron Age origin, suggesting that it could represent a deliberately buried or concealed ritual structure that was rediscovered and excavated centuries later. The authors even considered the possibility that it represented a Druidic temple.

It is a fascinating proposition.


But it is also important to distinguish between an archaeological hypothesis and an established fact.

There is currently no conclusive archaeological evidence proving that Gilmerton Cove is an Iron Age temple. Indeed, the 2019 researchers acknowledged that no pre-eighteenth-century artefacts had been recovered from the Cove.

That missing evidence is crucial.



Archaeology investigates the mystery

Between 2000 and 2002, archaeologists carried out a substantial investigation of the Cove before it was developed as a visitor attraction.

The excavation revealed previously unknown features, including areas cut into the rock floor, a well or cistern, a sump and another entrance.


The investigation also demonstrated just how complicated the history of the site had become.

The Cove had apparently been altered, reused and disturbed over a considerable period. Archaeologists recovered material dating from the last few centuries, but the evidence did not provide the definitive answer that enthusiasts of the mystery had hoped for.


In other words, archaeology did not destroy the mystery. It actually demonstrated why the mystery is so difficult to solve.



Could it have been a quarry?

One of the more practical explanations is that the chambers originated from quarrying or mineral exploration.

Gilmerton was historically associated with mining, and underground excavations were not unusual in the surrounding area. Coles himself compared the Cove with other rock-cut workings and suggested that some might have begun as exploratory excavations searching for useful minerals.


Under this interpretation, the strange chambers may have developed gradually. Stone was removed. The resulting spaces were subsequently adapted. Benches and tables were carved into the remaining rock. Later occupants modified the passages and rooms.

Eventually, the original purpose became forgotten.


This would explain why the Cove can appear simultaneously like a mine, a dwelling, a meeting place and an underground temple.

But it still leaves questions about some of its deliberate features.



A hidden network?

Local tradition has long claimed that the Cove formed part of a much larger underground network.

One story suggests that tunnels once extended towards The Drum, the historic estate nearby. Historic Environment Scotland records this tradition but does not treat the supposed tunnel network as established fact.

Modern investigation has nevertheless shown that the visible complex does not necessarily represent everything that once existed.


Geophysical investigations have suggested that additional subterranean features may survive beneath the surrounding ground.

That does not automatically mean that a vast secret tunnel system lies beneath Edinburgh. But it does reinforce the possibility that the surviving Cove represents only part of a more complicated underground landscape.



The real mystery

Perhaps the most interesting thing about Gilmerton Cove is that its mystery does not depend upon supernatural claims.

The chambers are real. The tool marks are real. The rock-cut furniture is real. The historical references are real.


What remains uncertain is how all these pieces fit together.

The strongest conventional evidence points towards an early eighteenth-century origin, with the site associated historically with Paterson and already being used socially by the 1720s. Archaeological research has also found features consistent with substantial deliberate construction during that period.


Yet the possibility of earlier activity has never completely disappeared from the debate.

The absence of definitive prehistoric artefacts makes an ancient temple interpretation difficult to demonstrate, while the unusual design leaves plenty of room for speculation.


That tension between evidence and possibility is precisely what makes the Cove so fascinating.



A mystery beneath an ordinary suburb

Today, Gilmerton is largely part of modern Edinburgh. Traffic, houses and everyday life surround a site that once seemed to belong to another world.

Yet beneath it survives an extraordinary reminder that Scotland's historic landscape is not always found in castles, standing stones or monumental ruins.

Sometimes it is hidden beneath someone's feet.


Gilmerton Cove may ultimately prove to have a relatively ordinary eighteenth-century explanation. Perhaps it was an ambitious private excavation, later adapted into a drinking den, meeting place and curiosity.

Or perhaps fragments of an earlier story really do survive within its walls.


For now, archaeology provides compelling evidence about what the Cove looks like and how it was used, but not a final answer to the question that has haunted the site for generations:

Until that question can be answered with evidence rather than speculation, the strange chambers beneath Edinburgh will retain their place among Scotland's most intriguing underground mysteries.

Gilmerton Cove is a designated historic site. Historic Environment Scotland lists it as a Category B building/site and records the structure as a subterranean cave and tunnel complex excavated from solid rock.
