Deep within the mountains, forests, and remote valleys of Central Asia lies one of the world’s most intriguing legends: the Almas, a mysterious wild humanoid said to inhabit the wilderness of Mongolia and surrounding regions. 

Similar in some ways to the North American Bigfoot and the Himalayan Yeti, the Almas has fascinated explorers, folklorists, and cryptozoologists for centuries.


Described as a large, hairy, human-like creature living far from civilisation, the Almas occupies a strange space between mythology and possible zoological mystery. 


While no scientific evidence has confirmed its existence, reports from local communities and explorers have kept the legend alive.



Origins of the Almas Legend

The word Almas (also spelled Alma or Almasty) comes from Mongolian and Central Asian folklore. Traditional stories describe the creature as a wild, hairy person living in remote regions such as the Altai Mountains, the Gobi Desert, and the mountains of Mongolia.


Unlike the frightening image often associated with the Yeti, Almas stories are frequently more human-like. In many accounts, Almas are described as shy, primitive beings that avoid contact with people rather than aggressive monsters.


Local legends vary, but common descriptions include:

- A human-like body covered with reddish-brown or dark hair

- A powerful build

- Height ranging from around 1.5 to 2.5 metres (5–8 feet)

- A flat face with heavy brow ridges

- Strong arms and legs

- An ability to survive in harsh environments


Some traditions describe Almas as living in caves, while others place them in isolated mountain valleys and forests.



The Almas and Central Asian Folklore

Stories of wild human-like beings appear throughout Central Asia. Mongolian, Kazakh, and Siberian traditions contain accounts of creatures that exist somewhere between humans and animals.


Unlike many Western monster legends, Almas stories are not always presented as supernatural. Some communities have historically regarded them as unusual wild people or a surviving branch of ancient humanity.

This has led some researchers to compare the Almas legend with the idea of surviving prehistoric human relatives, such as Neanderthals or other archaic humans.


However, there is currently no scientific evidence connecting Almas reports to any surviving human species.



Famous Almas Reports

One of the most famous Almas stories involves a reported capture in the 19th century.

According to some accounts, a wild, hairy female creature called Zana was captured in the Caucasus region (modern-day Georgia) during the 1800s. She was described as powerful and unusually hairy, and local stories claimed she was an Almas.


According to locals, Zana was captured sometime in the mid-to-late 1800s in the forests of Abkhazia (then part of the Russian Empire, near modern Georgia). Hunters reportedly found a woman living wild and described her as unusually tall, extremely strong, dark-skinned, and covered with thick reddish-brown hair. Because of these traits, some locals identified her with the folkloric Almasty/Abnauayu.


She was eventually taken to the estate of an Abkhaz nobleman, Edgi Genaba, in the village of Tkhina. Reports say she was initially confined, later allowed more freedom, and lived there until her death around the late 19th century. She reportedly never learned normal speech, although she could perform tasks and interacted with villagers.


Researchers later examined claims about Zana's descendants, and some suggested unusual genetic findings. However, the evidence remains controversial, and the story has not established the existence of an unknown human species.

Zana is said to have had several children. One of them, Khwit, became important to later investigations because his remains were identified and used in genetic studies.


For decades, cryptozoologists argued that Zana might have been a surviving archaic human, such as a remnant population of Neanderthals or another unknown hominid. Her descriptions—hairy body, unusual strength, and inability to speak—were used as evidence for that idea.


However, scientific research points in a different direction. A 2021 genetic study examined DNA linked to Zana and her son Khwit. The researchers concluded that Zana was a modern human, not an unknown hominid. Her genetic ancestry was traced to populations with deep roots in present-day East Africa, and the authors suggested that conditions such as congenital generalised hypertrichosis (a disorder causing excessive body hair) might help explain some of the unusual descriptions of her appearance.


Modern historians and researchers often view Zana’s story less as a “missing link” mystery and more as a story of a vulnerable human being who was captured, exploited, and turned into a local curiosity.



Another frequently mentioned case comes from Mongolia in the early 20th century, when explorers and researchers reported hearing local accounts of Almas encounters. Some Soviet-era scientists took an interest in the subject and investigated whether the legends could represent surviving prehistoric humans.



The Search for the Almas

Interest in the Almas grew during the 20th century as explorers began systematic searches in Mongolia and Central Asia.


Researchers investigated:

- Eyewitness reports

- Footprints

- Hair samples

- Local traditions

- Possible archaeological connections


Some Soviet scientists and later cryptozoologists suggested that isolated populations of unknown hominins might survive in remote regions.

The theory was partly inspired by discoveries such as the Neanderthals, whose existence was unknown to modern science until fossil evidence was found in the 19th century.


However, despite many expeditions, no confirmed remains, DNA samples, or living specimens have been discovered.



Famous Soviet-era cases


1. The Dagestan “wild man” case (1941)

One of the most dramatic accounts came from Dagestan during World War II. According to later reports, Soviet soldiers or local authorities captured a hairy, naked humanoid male. 

A military doctor, often identified in later literature as Dr. V. S. Karapetyan, was said to have examined him. The story claimed the individual was extremely strong, unable to speak normally, and had unusual body hair and proportions.


The 1941 Dagestan “captured Almasty” case is probably the most famous Soviet wild-man report because it allegedly involved a living individual examined by a Soviet military doctor. It is also one of the most controversial, because the documentation is incomplete and the story survives mainly through later researchers who collected the account.


The setting: Dagestan, 1941

The story is said to have taken place in the Dagestan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (North Caucasus) during the first months of the German invasion of the Soviet Union. 

According to later accounts, a Soviet military unit or local authorities encountered a strange naked, hairy male figure in the mountains near Buinaksk. Because the region was a war zone, there was suspicion that the individual might be an enemy agent disguised in some way. 

The man was brought for examination to Lieutenant Colonel Dr. V. S. Karapetyan, a physician in the Soviet Army medical service.


Karapetyan’s reported examination

According to the account later circulated among Almas researchers, Karapetyan entered a shed where the captive was being held. He described seeing:

• a male human-shaped figure

• standing upright and apparently adult

• naked and barefoot

• covered over much of the body with dark brown hair with hair on the chest, shoulders, and back

• hairless palms and soles

• a very powerful build


The reported height was around 180 cm (about 6 feet). The figure was said to have human body proportions, but with unusual strength and heavy hair growth. One often-repeated detail is that the captive reportedly could not tolerate a warm room because he sweated heavily, so he was kept in a cooler shed.


Karapetyan’s supposed conclusion was not that he had found an animal, but that he was examining some kind of wild human. He reportedly ruled out the idea that it was simply a person wearing a disguise. 



What happened afterward?

This is where the story becomes much less certain.

Later versions claim:

• The captive was released or escaped

• Other later reports claimed he was killed or executed


Information about the incident was eventually passed to Soviet researchers investigating wild-man reports.


There is no publicly available body, skeleton, photograph, medical file, or authenticated biological sample from the case. That absence is the biggest problem for treating it as evidence of an unknown hominin.


How Boris Porshnev used the case

The case became important to Boris Porshnev, who argued that Almas reports might represent surviving populations of archaic humans, possibly Neanderthals. Porshnev was involved in Soviet efforts to collect reports of “snowmen” and wild people from across Central Asia. 


For Porshnev, the Dagestan story was valuable because it was not merely a footprint or a distant sighting—it was a claimed close encounter with a living specimen.

However, mainstream anthropologists did not accept it as proof. Problems included:

• no preserved remains

• unclear chain of custody of the report

• no independent medical documentation

• reliance on memories and later retellings



Possible ordinary explanations

Researchers who do not accept the Almas interpretation have suggested possibilities such as:


A person with unusual hair growth

Conditions such as severe hypertrichosis can produce extreme body hair. A person with developmental or cognitive disabilities, living isolated from society, might have been misunderstood as something non-human.


A traumatized or displaced person

The chaos of wartime Dagestan makes unusual encounters more plausible.


A folklore layer added afterward

The original event may have been altered as it passed through retellings, especially because it fit existing Caucasian “wild man” traditions.



Why the case remains famous

The reason enthusiasts still discuss it is that, unlike many Almas reports, it allegedly involved a trained observer—a military doctor—who supposedly said the figure was human in form but extremely unusual. The reason scientists remain skeptical is that the entire case rests on testimony rather than recoverable evidence.



A related and fascinating follow-up is the Soviet Academy of Sciences “Snowman Commission” of the late 1950s–60s, where Porshnev tried to turn these stories into a formal scientific investigation. That effort produced hundreds of reports but no accepted specimen. 



2. The 1950s–1960s Soviet “snowman” investigations

The most famous academic advocate was Boris Porshnev.

Porshnev argued that some wild-man reports might represent surviving archaic humans, possibly related to Neanderthals or another extinct hominin group. He used historical accounts, folklore, and witness reports to argue that such beings might have survived in isolated mountain regions.


In the late 1950s, Soviet scientists organised investigations into “snowman” reports, including expeditions and collections of testimony. A number of researchers interviewed shepherds, hunters, and villagers who claimed encounters with Almas-like beings.

The investigations produced a large archive of stories, but no universally accepted physical evidence—no verified body, skeleton, or uncontested DNA sample. 


The Soviet Snowman Commission (officially the Commission for the Study of the Snowman Problem) was a short-lived but remarkable attempt by Soviet scientists in the late 1950s to investigate reports of the Yeti, Almas, and other “wild human” creatures. It is one of the few times a major scientific institution treated a cryptozoological question as a serious research topic.


Why the Soviets became interested

Interest exploded in the Soviet Union in 1957, after reports from the Pamir Mountains of Tajikistan by hydrologist Aleksandr Pronin, who claimed to have seen an unusual humanoid creature during an expedition. The story attracted attention because the Pamirs were remote, mountainous, and rich in local traditions about wild beings.



Formation of the Commission

In 1958, the Soviet Academy of Sciences created a special commission to examine the question. It included scientists from different fields, including anthropology, zoology, geography, and biology. The commission was associated with figures such as Porshnev, geologist Sergei Obruchev, and botanist Kirill Stanyukovich, who became associated with the field expedition.


The commission’s goals were to:

• collect reports of sightings

• examine footprints and other traces

• study folklore and historical accounts

• organise field investigations

• determine whether an unknown hominoid could exist in Soviet territory


Porshnev published appeals for information, and the commission reportedly received over a thousand reports from across the Soviet Union.


The 1958 Pamir Expedition

The commission’s major effort was a field expedition to the Pamir Mountains in Tajikistan.

The team focused on remote regions such as:

• the Muk-Su River valley

• the Sarez basin

• high mountain areas where local people reported any “snowman” encounters 


Researchers interviewed residents, examined reports, and searched for physical evidence.

The expedition was led by Kirill Stanyukovich, a botanist who was more interested in the mountain environment than convinced that a creature existed.


What did they find?

The expedition found:

• local traditions about wild mountain beings

• eyewitness reports

• possible tracks and signs


But it did not find:

• a living specimen

• a body

• a skeleton

• DNA

• any evidence accepted by mainstream biology


The official scientific conclusion was essentially that the expedition had failed to demonstrate the existence of a snowman.


The controversy afterward

The failure did not end the debate.

Supporters of Porshnev argued that:

• the expedition was not focused enough on searching for the creature

• some scientists involved were skeptical from the beginning

• promising reports were not fully investigated


Critics argued:

• eyewitness accounts were unreliable

• no physical evidence existed

• the idea of a surviving unknown hominin lacked biological support


Afterward, official scientific interest declined, though private researchers continued what became known as hominology—the study of alleged unknown human relatives such as Almas, Yeti, and Sasquatch.



Why it mattered historically

The Snowman Commission was not simply a “monster hunt.” It reflected genuine scientific questions of the era:


Could isolated populations survive unnoticed?

How reliable are oral traditions?

Were there gaps in the fossil record?

Could human evolution have taken unexpected paths?


The idea of a surviving Neanderthal-like population has become extremely unlikely with modern genetics and archaeology, but the Commission remains fascinating because it shows a moment when the boundary between folklore, anthropology, and evolutionary science was being actively debated.


One of the most interesting later developments was the work of Marie-Jeanne Koffmann, who continued investigating Caucasus Almas reports for decades after the official Soviet effort faded. 



3. Marie-Jeanne Koffmann and Caucasus research

A major later investigator was Marie-Jeanne Koffmann, who worked with Soviet and post-Soviet researchers studying Caucasus reports.

She collected:

• footprint casts

• eyewitness testimony

• alleged hair samples

• environmental observations


She believed the reports represented an unknown hominoid, though mainstream zoology did not accept this conclusion.


Marie-Jeanne Koffmann (1919–2021) was one of the most important figures in the Soviet and post-Soviet search for the Almasty—the Caucasus “wild man” tradition related to the broader Eurasian wild-man legends. 

She was unusual among cryptid researchers because she was a trained physician, mountaineer, and field investigator who spent decades collecting reports rather than relying mainly on folklore. 


Early life and unusual background

Koffmann was born in France in 1919 but moved to the Soviet Union in the 1930s. She became a surgeon, worked in Soviet medical institutions, and served during the Second World War. 

Later accounts also describe her as having survived imprisonment in the Soviet Gulag system before returning to scientific and mountaineering work.


She became known as a tough field worker: someone who could travel through difficult mountain terrain, interview isolated communities, and document unusual claims firsthand.


Connection to the Soviet Snowman Commission

Koffmann was involved in the famous 1958 Soviet Pamir expedition, organized in the wake of the Soviet Academy of Sciences’ interest in “snowman” reports. The expedition was connected with researchers such as Boris Porshnev, who believed reports of wild men might represent surviving archaic humans.

While the official expedition did not find a specimen, Koffmann’s interest continued. She shifted much of her attention to the North Caucasus, where she investigated reports of the Almasty. 


Her Almasty investigations

From the 1960s onward, Koffmann interviewed hundreds of people across the Caucasus. She focused particularly on regions such as Kabardino-Balkaria and other mountain areas where stories of wild humans had been passed down for generations.


She collected:

• eyewitness testimonies

• descriptions of behaviour and appearance

• alleged footprints

• local names and traditions for wild beings


She reportedly gathered more than 500 witness accounts over the course of her research.


What did witnesses describe?

According to Koffmann’s collected reports, the Almasty was usually described as:

• human-shaped and bipedal

• around human height or taller

• covered with dark or reddish hair

• extremely strong

• shy but intelligent

• unable to speak normal human language

• living in forests and remote valleys


She argued that the accounts were surprisingly consistent across different communities. 

Koffmann’s interpretation was that the Almasty might be a surviving archaic human, possibly related to Neanderthals. She considered it a biological question rather than simply a monster legend. 


The famous footprint evidence

One of her better-known pieces of claimed evidence was a footprint cast collected during her fieldwork. Supporters considered it important because it came from a region with many independent witness reports. Critics pointed out that a footprint alone cannot establish the existence of an unknown hominid, since human footprints can vary greatly and misinterpretations are possible.


Her scientific style

Even researchers skeptical of the Almasty hypothesis have often acknowledged that Koffmann’s methods were more systematic than many cryptid investigations. 


She recorded details such as:

• the witness’s identity

• circumstances of observation

• distance from the animal/person

• duration of encounter

• environmental conditions


Her work helped create what Russian researchers later called hominology—the study of alleged surviving human relatives. 



The 1992 Almasty expedition

In later life, Koffmann became involved in international interest in the Almasty. A 1992 expedition in the Caucasus was organised with filmmaker Sylvain Pallix, following her decades of investigations. Reports about the expedition highlighted her extensive archive of witness accounts and field observations.


The 1992 Koffmann–Pallix Expedition was the most ambitious search ever organised for the Almasty in the Caucasus. Unlike earlier Soviet expeditions, it combined experienced Soviet field researchers with French funding, documentary filmmaking, and a plan to collect modern biological evidence if an Almasty were found.


Why it was organised

By the early 1990s, Marie-Jeanne Koffmann had spent more than 20 years interviewing witnesses throughout the Caucasus. 


She claimed to have assembled:

• detailed maps of reported encounters

• descriptions of seasonal movements


The project gained momentum when French documentary filmmaker Sylvain Pallix read Koffmann's articles in the archaeology magazine Archéologia. He proposed making a documentary and helped secure funding from sponsors. 

The expedition also received support from respected French paleoanthropologist Yves Coppens, who encouraged the investigation as a legitimate field inquiry, although this should not be taken as an endorsement of the Almasty hypothesis itself.


The plan

Compared with the small Soviet expeditions of the 1950s, this was intended to be a well-equipped operation.

According to reports, the team planned to include roughly two dozen participants—French and Russian scientists plus a film crew—and to search the Kabardino-Balkaria region in the North Caucasus. 


Planned equipment included:

• a helicopter

• three ultralight aircraft

• four-wheel-drive vehicles

• camping and communications equipment


The search area covered about 4,800 square miles (12,400 km²) of mountainous terrain.


What they hoped to do

One aspect that distinguished the expedition was that Koffmann wanted biological evidence, not simply another sighting.


If an Almasty were encountered, the proposed protocol was to:

• temporarily immobilize it with a tranquilizer,

• collect blood and skin samples,

• make facial casts and photographs

• fit it with a tracking device

• then release it 'unharmed'


This reflected a shift toward evidence that could be evaluated by genetics and zoology rather than relying solely on eyewitness testimony.


What happened?

Despite months of fieldwork, the expedition did not find an Almasty.

Reports indicate the team found only ambiguous traces, such as:

• large footprints

• hair samples

• droppings


None of these could be conclusively linked to an unknown hominin. No photographs, body, living specimen, or DNA accepted by mainstream science resulted from the expedition.


The documentary

Sylvain Pallix produced a documentary based on the expedition, often referred to by the French title "Almas, le yéti du Caucase" ("Almas, the Yeti of the Caucasus"). 

While it did not provide definitive evidence, it introduced the Almasty tradition and Koffmann's decades of research to a much wider audience in France and Europe


Why it's still discussed

The 1992 expedition is remembered less for what it found than for how it was conducted. It attempted to move beyond folklore by:

• interviewing witnesses systematically

• searching specific "hotspot" areas identified from decades of reports

• planning for biological sampling rather than simply observation


From a scientific standpoint, however, it did not produce evidence that changed the consensus. The lack of verifiable physical evidence meant the Almasty remained an intriguing subject of folklore and cryptozoology rather than an accepted zoological discovery.

One intriguing detail from the expedition's planning is that Koffmann said one of her most trusted sources was a zoologist colleague who claimed to have watched an Almasty for about six minutes in August 1991. That report helped convince her that another large-scale search was worthwhile, although it remained an eyewitness account rather than independently verifiable evidence.



How modern science views her work

Koffmann’s documentation is historically interesting, but her central claim—that the Almasty represents a surviving archaic hominin—is not supported by current evidence.

Modern anthropology would expect a surviving population of Neanderthals or another unknown human relative to leave traces such as:

• bones

• archaeological remains

• genetic evidence

• ecological evidence


None have been confirmed.


Her work remains significant not because it proved the Almasty exists, but because it represents one of the most extensive attempts ever made to treat “wild man” reports as a field anthropology problem.

A particularly interesting part of Koffmann’s archive is that many of the Caucasus eyewitness accounts describe behavior rather than just appearance—for example, tool use, interactions with villagers, and avoidance of people—which is why her files continue to attract interest among researchers of folklore, anthropology, and cryptozoology.



Why did Soviet scientists take it seriously?

There were several reasons:


1. The Neanderthal question was still developing

During the mid-20th century, some scientists imagined that isolated archaic human populations might have survived longer than previously believed.

Today we know Neanderthals disappeared as a distinct population roughly 40,000 years ago, though they contributed DNA to many modern human populations.



2. Soviet science had a tradition of investigating unusual phenomena

The USSR sometimes supported unusual research programs if they intersected with anthropology, biology, geography, or military interests.



3. Vast remote regions

The Soviet Union contained enormous wilderness areas—from the Caucasus to Siberia—where researchers believed unknown populations could theoretically persist.



How do scientists view the Almas today?

The mainstream view is that there is no confirmed evidence for a surviving unknown hominin in Central Asia or the Caucasus. Explanations usually considered include:

• misidentified bears

• folklore traditions

• encounters with isolated or unusual humans

• exaggerated reports

• people with rare physical traits

• cultural memories of earlier human populations


The idea that Almas could be surviving Neanderthals is now considered highly unlikely because a breeding population would almost certainly leave archaeological, genetic, or ecological traces.


The most intriguing aspect

The Almas tradition is unusual because it sits between folklore and anthropology. Many “monster” legends describe animals, but Almas stories describe something much closer to a wild human: a being that walks upright, understands people, uses simple tools, and occupies the boundary between civilization and wilderness.

That is why figures like Porshnev were fascinated by it: the question was not “is there a monster in the mountains?” but rather “could another kind of human have survived into recent times?”



Possible Explanations

There are several theories about what may explain Almas reports.


Misidentified Animals

Some sightings may involve known wildlife. Large bears standing upright can appear surprisingly human-like, especially at a distance or in poor visibility.

Other animals, such as wolves or unusual-looking primates, may also contribute to mistaken reports.


Folklore and Cultural Memory

The Almas may represent a traditional explanation for encounters with unfamiliar people, wild animals, or isolated communities.

Many cultures have stories about mysterious beings living beyond the edges of known territory. These stories often serve as warnings, lessons, or ways of understanding unexplored landscapes.



Survival of Ancient Humans

Some cryptozoologists propose that the Almas could be a surviving population of ancient humans, perhaps related to Neanderthals or another extinct hominin group.

The idea is scientifically interesting because human evolution included many different species. Fossils have shown that our planet once contained several types of humans living at the same time. 


However, a surviving population would likely leave significant evidence, including bones, DNA, and archaeological traces.



The Almas and the Neanderthal Theory

The connection between Almas and Neanderthals is one of the most popular theories among enthusiasts.


Supporters point out that:

- Neanderthals were physically robust

- They lived across Eurasia

- They had large brains and human-like behaviour

- They survived until relatively recently in geological terms


Some speculate that small groups could have survived in isolated areas.

Scientists generally reject this idea because there is no fossil, genetic, or archaeological evidence showing that Neanderthals survived into modern times.



Evidence and Scientific Investigation

Like Bigfoot and the Yeti, the Almas has produced plenty of stories but little verifiable evidence.

Reported evidence includes:


Footprints

Occasional reports describe unusual tracks, but none have been scientifically confirmed.


Hair Samples

Claims of unusual hair have been investigated, but no sample has been proven to come from an unknown creature.


Eyewitness Accounts

Local witnesses often provide detailed descriptions, and many reports come from people familiar with the wilderness. However, eyewitness testimony can be affected by distance, lighting, expectations, and memory.



The Almas in Popular Culture

The Almas remains less famous internationally than Bigfoot or the Yeti, but it has appeared in documentaries, books, and cryptozoological research.

For enthusiasts, the creature represents one of the last great mysteries of human evolution: the possibility that another human-like species could still exist somewhere beyond the boundaries of modern exploration.


For scientists, the Almas is an example of how folklore, history, and biology can intersect while reminding us of the importance of physical evidence.



Why the Legend Continues

The enduring appeal of the Almas comes from a simple but powerful idea: perhaps the world still contains secrets.

Mongolia and Central Asia contain enormous areas of wilderness, including mountains, deserts, and remote valleys where few people live. These landscapes inspire stories of hidden creatures and lost worlds.


Whether the Almas is a surviving ancient human, a misunderstood animal, or a fascinating piece of folklore, the legend reflects humanity’s curiosity about its own past and the unknown corners of the planet.

For now, the Almas remains a mystery — a shadowy figure walking somewhere between anthropology, mythology, and imagination.
