One of the most notable cases involved multi-ton shipments of cocaine concealed within legitimate cargo containers. In some instances, individual seizures have exceeded 10–20 tons, representing hundreds of millions of pounds in street value.

The Philadelphia Cocaine Shipment

In 2019, authorities in the United States intercepted one of the largest cocaine shipments ever discovered on American soil at the Port of Philadelphia.


The drugs were hidden aboard a cargo vessel that had travelled from South America and were discovered after coordinated intelligence sharing between multiple agencies, including the DEA.

The seizure amounted to more than 16 tons of cocaine, marking it as one of the most significant single interdictions in U.S. history.


The operation led to arrests across multiple countries and exposed links between maritime shipping routes and transnational trafficking organisations.



Operation Plexus in Germany

The Operation Plexus investigation was one of the biggest blows ever dealt to cocaine trafficking in Europe. 

Following a tip-off from Colombian authorities, German investigators uncovered a criminal network that had allegedly smuggled 35.5 tonnes of cocaine from Latin America to Europe between April and September 2023. 

The drugs were concealed in shipping containers among legitimate cargo such as fruit and vegetables. 


Most of the cocaine—around 25 tonnes—was seized at the Port of Hamburg, with additional shipments intercepted in Rotterdam and Guayaquil, Ecuador. German authorities estimated the haul had a street value of €2.6 billion (about £2.2 billion). 

The investigation led to seven arrests across Germany. Prosecutors allege the group used dozens of shell companies to disguise the shipments and import cocaine into Europe on behalf of organised crime networks. 


Authorities described the operation as Germany's largest-ever cocaine seizure and a major setback for international drug trafficking. 



The Global Reach of Cartels

Many of the largest drug busts are connected, directly or indirectly, to major trafficking organisations such as the Sinaloa Cartel and historically the Medellín Cartel.


These groups operate less like traditional criminal gangs and more like multinational corporations, with divisions for production, logistics, finance, and enforcement.
