Why Is the Netherlands Moving Billions of Euros of Gold Out of North America?

The Dutch central bank has moved 86 tonnes of gold from its North American holdings to London — and says growing geopolitical unrest is one reason it wanted its reserves easier to access in a crisis.


Something unusual has happened to the Netherlands' gold reserves.


Between March and August 2026, De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB), the Dutch central bank, reallocated approximately 86 tonnes of gold from its holdings in the United States and Canada to London.


The gold was worth billions of euros.


And while DNB insists that this was not a withdrawal of trust from the United States or Canada, its explanation is nevertheless significant.

The bank explicitly cited “increasing geopolitical unrest” and a desire to strengthen its ability to access and trade its gold during a crisis.



So why has the location of Dutch gold suddenly become important?

The Netherlands still has a lot of gold. DNB holds approximately 612.4 tonnes of gold, valued at around €72.2 billion at the end of 2025.


For decades, those reserves have deliberately been spread across several locations. Before the latest operation, approximately:

- 31.3% was held in New York

- 19.7% was held in Ottawa

- 18.1% was held in London

- 30.8% was held in the Netherlands


After the relocation, the distribution changed significantly:

- New York: 18.5%

- Ottawa: 18.5%

- London: 32.1%

- Netherlands: 30.8%


London therefore became the largest foreign storage location for Dutch gold.

That is a substantial change in where a sovereign country's wealth is physically and financially positioned.

But did the Netherlands actually move 86 tonnes of gold?

Not exactly. This is where the headline can be misleading. DNB says approximately 59 tonnes were sold in New York and equivalent gold was purchased in London.

More than 27 tonnes were physically transferred from the United States and Canada to the Netherlands, after which a similar amount was transferred from the Netherlands to London.


So the overall reallocation amounted to approximately 86 tonnes, but much of the transaction was achieved through buying and selling rather than physically transporting every bar across the Atlantic.


The amount of Dutch gold did not change. Its location did.



Why London?

DNB's explanation is straightforward. Gold stored in London can be traded more easily because London is one of the world's major centres for physical gold trading.

DNB says gold held at the Bank of England meets modern international trading standards and is considered particularly easy to trade.


In a severe crisis, the central bank wants to be able to mobilise its reserves quickly.

Gold held in New York and Ottawa, DNB says, cannot be utilised as quickly and directly in such circumstances.


In other words, this wasn't simply about where the gold is safest. It was also about where the gold is most immediately usable.



What does “geopolitical unrest” really mean?

DNB has not said that it believes the United States will confiscate Dutch gold. Nor has it accused Washington of doing anything improper.

Its stated policy is risk diversification.


But the timing is impossible to ignore.


Relations between the United States and several European countries have become considerably more complicated, with disputes over trade, security and the future direction of transatlantic relations.

European central bankers have also been publicly discussing increased uncertainty surrounding the international financial system. Reuters reported in August that European officials were increasingly concerned about volatility and strained relations with the United States.


Against that background, a central bank deciding that it wants a greater proportion of its physical gold somewhere else becomes more significant.



Gold is different from most reserves

There is something unusual about gold. A government can hold foreign currency, government bonds or other financial assets electronically.

Gold is physical. Someone has to store it somewhere. And whoever controls the vault controls the immediate physical custody of the metal.


That creates a geopolitical consideration that doesn't exist in quite the same way with assets held electronically.


For centuries, countries have therefore worried about where their gold is located during periods of war, financial instability and political uncertainty.

The Netherlands is not inventing this strategy. It is revisiting an extremely old one.



The Russian precedent

One event changed the way many governments think about foreign-held reserves.

Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the United States and its allies froze approximately $300 billion of Russian central-bank assets.


That demonstrated something fundamental about the modern financial system:

Where a country's assets are held can matter enormously when geopolitical relations break down.


The Netherlands is a close US ally. There is no evidence that Dutch officials believe their gold is about to be seized.

But central banks don't necessarily have to believe something is likely to decide that it is worth preparing for. They have to consider what happens if the unlikely becomes possible.



And the Netherlands isn't alone

The Dutch move comes after another major European gold operation.

France moved approximately 129 tonnes of gold that had been held in New York, selling the US-held metal and acquiring an equivalent amount in Europe between July 2025 and January 2026.


That doesn't prove that European countries are abandoning the United States.

But it does show that the question of where national gold reserves are held is being reconsidered.


And if more central banks begin doing the same thing, it could become a significant trend rather than a series of isolated decisions.



Why not bring it all home?

If geopolitical risk is the concern, why not simply return all the gold to the Netherlands?

Because there is another consideration: liquidity.


London is arguably the world's most important centre for physical gold trading.

DNB therefore sees value in having a significant portion of its gold somewhere where it can be sold, exchanged or used rapidly during a crisis.


This creates a balancing act.

Keep gold at home and you maximise direct physical control. Keep it in a major international trading centre and you maximise liquidity.


Keep it in several countries and you spread geographical risk.

The Dutch solution is to do all three.


After the relocation, roughly 31% remains in the Netherlands, roughly 32% is in London, and the remainder is divided between New York and Ottawa.



Is this a vote of no confidence in America?

That depends on how you interpret it. DNB itself would almost certainly reject that description.

Its official explanation is about crisis preparedness, tradability and diversification.


And there is a perfectly rational argument for what it has done.


If a country keeps almost one-third of its gold in one foreign jurisdiction, moving some of it elsewhere reduces concentration risk.


But there is another interpretation.

Perhaps central banks are beginning to think differently about the geopolitical assumption that has underpinned the global financial system for decades: that Western allies can safely keep enormous quantities of national wealth in each other's jurisdictions indefinitely.


That assumption is being tested.



The bigger shift toward gold

The Dutch move is occurring at a time when central banks have already been buying unusually large amounts of gold.

Central banks purchased a record 289 tonnes in the second quarter of 2026, according to Reuters, as governments continued looking for protection against geopolitical, inflationary and currency risks. 


A World Gold Council survey also found that many central banks expected to increase their gold holdings.


That means there are potentially two separate trends occurring simultaneously: Central banks are buying more gold. And: Some central banks are reconsidering where their existing gold should be stored.


Those are not the same thing.

But together they suggest that gold's role in the international monetary system may be changing.



The strange irony

The United States remains at the centre of the global financial system. The dollar remains the dominant reserve currency. New York remains one of the world's most important financial centres.

And the United States has enormous influence over global financial markets.


Yet one of its European allies has just decided that a larger proportion of its national gold should be held somewhere else.

And it isn't doing so because it suddenly believes gold is worthless.


Quite the opposite.


It is doing so because it believes gold is important enough to make sure it can access and trade it during a crisis.



Could this become a European trend?

This is where the story becomes particularly interesting. If the Netherlands and France are reassessing the geographical distribution of their gold, what about Germany?

Germany holds one of the world's largest gold reserves, and a substantial amount has historically been stored in New York.


Germany previously repatriated large quantities of its gold from the United States, although it still maintains significant holdings there.

The question now is whether the Dutch decision changes the calculation for other European central banks.


Would Germany want to reduce its remaining US exposure? Would Italy? Would Belgium?

Would other countries conclude that diversification means moving more gold closer to home or into European trading centres?


At present, there is no evidence of a mass European withdrawal from US vaults.

But central-bank decisions can sometimes reveal a change in thinking before that change becomes obvious elsewhere.



A warning sign — or sensible housekeeping?

There are two ways to look at what has happened. The first is alarmist: European countries are losing confidence in America and are quietly removing their wealth.

The second is much less dramatic: Central banks are simply managing geopolitical risk more carefully in an increasingly uncertain world.


The available evidence supports the second interpretation more strongly.


DNB itself says the purpose is to improve crisis preparedness and spread risk. But that doesn't make the development uninteresting.

Because risk management tells us something about what risks an institution believes are worth preparing for.


And DNB has now decided that the geographical location of billions of euros of Dutch gold deserves a rethink.



The question nobody can answer yet

The Netherlands hasn't said: “We don't trust America.” It has said something more carefully worded: “We want our reserves to be easier to access in a crisis.”

Those two statements are not equivalent.


But they aren't completely unrelated either.


A central bank does not normally spend months reorganising hundreds of tonnes of gold without having considered the possibility that circumstances could change.

The Netherlands has therefore made a relatively simple decision with potentially much wider implications: Some of its national wealth is now positioned differently because the world around it has become less predictable.


And if other countries follow, the movement of gold could become a useful indicator of something much bigger.

Not necessarily the collapse of the dollar. Not necessarily the end of America's financial dominance. But perhaps the beginning of a world in which countries are becoming increasingly unwilling to assume that geopolitical stability can simply be taken for granted.



The bottom line

The Netherlands has not abandoned the United States. It has not reduced the amount of gold it owns. It has not announced that American vaults are unsafe.

But it has deliberately reduced the proportion of its gold held in North America and increased the proportion held in London.


And it has done so while explicitly citing geopolitical unrest and crisis preparedness. 

That makes the story bigger than 86 tonnes of gold. It is a story about trust, sovereignty, liquidity and the physical location of national wealth.


The gold hasn't disappeared.

But its owners are becoming increasingly interested in making sure they know exactly where it is — and how quickly they can get to it if the world changes.
