On 19 March 2008, something extraordinary happened in the distant universe. A massive star died. The event produced an enormous explosion known as a gamma-ray burst, releasing an incredible amount of energy into space. But there was something particularly unusual about this one. For a brief period, the explosion was bright enough to be seen from Earth with the naked eye. The remarkable part? The explosion happened roughly 7.5 billion light-years away. By the time its light reached Earth, our planet had travelled through billions of years of cosmic history. Civilisations had risen and disappeared, continents had shifted and species had evolved — while the light from this distant catastrophe was still making its way towards us.
