On the evening of March 13, 1997, something extraordinary unfolded over the American Southwest. Beginning in northern Arizona and continuing south toward Phoenix, thousands of people reported seeing massive unidentified lights moving silently across the sky. Witnesses included airline pilots, police officers, military personnel, astronomers, and ordinary citizens. Telephone lines at police departments, local news stations, and military facilities were overwhelmed by calls. Unlike many UFO cases that depend on a handful of observers, the Phoenix Lights involved thousands of independent witnesses spread across hundreds of miles.
