There are few sights more unsettling in a city accustomed to almost everything than a group of people quietly climbing out of a manhole in the middle of the night. Yet that is precisely what happened repeatedly across New York in May 2026. Security cameras captured groups of people entering the city's vast sewer network, disappearing underground for hours, and later emerging carrying lights and wearing protective clothing.
