Jinn: Islamic Supernatural Beings

Jinn (also spelled djinn) are supernatural beings found in Islamic belief and wider Middle Eastern folklore. While the concept predates Islam, it was incorporated into Islamic theology and developed into a distinct category of creation alongside humans and angels. Unlike the friendly, wish-granting "genies" of Western popular culture, jinn occupy a far more complex role in Islamic tradition, where they are regarded as intelligent beings with free will, capable of both good and evil. Origins of the Jinn According to the Qur'an, jinn were created by God from "smokeless fire" (Qur'an 15:27 and 55:15), while humans were created from clay. Islamic tradition also teaches that angels were created from light. Jinn are considered a separate race of beings who inhabit the world alongside humanity, although they are normally invisible to human eyes.
