Bird Funeral Dances: The Feathered Farewell Nobody Invited You To You know you've been on the internet too long when someone casually says, "Did you know birds hold funerals?" and your first reaction isn't disbelief—it's, "Do they have a dress code?" As it turns out, some birds really do gather around dead members of their own species.  Scientists call it "mobbing", "inspection", or "death-related behaviour." The rest of us call it the most awkward wake ever held in a hedge. Now, before anyone starts ordering tiny black waistcoats for pigeons, it's worth pointing out that we don't actually know what's going through a bird's mind. They probably aren't standing there whispering, "He always did love sunflower seeds." But that won't stop us imagining it. Because if birds did have funerals, they'd be absolutely brilliant.
