Project PROTEUS: How the Royal Navy Is Exploring the Future of Autonomous Naval Aviation

The future of naval aviation may not always involve a pilot in the cockpit. As autonomous technologies continue to reshape military operations, the Royal Navy is investing in new ways to extend its reach, improve situational awareness and reduce risk to personnel. At the centre of this effort is Project PROTEUS, one of the Royal Navy's flagship technology demonstrators designed to explore how autonomous aircraft can support maritime operations alongside crewed helicopters and warships. Rather than replacing existing aircraft, PROTEUS is intended to evaluate how uncrewed systems can become force multipliers across a wide range of missions. What Is Project PROTEUS? Project PROTEUS is an experimental programme developed by the UK Ministry of Defence to investigate the use of autonomous rotary-wing aircraft in maritime operations. The programme centres on a modified helicopter platform equipped with advanced autonomous flight systems, allowing it to operate with little or no onboard hu...
